This course is designed to help students make real-world connections with mathematics. Course topics will include measurement, elementary statistics, financial literacy, and applications of mathematics in our world.

Upon completion, students will be able to:

• Identify units of measure in the U.S. Customary and metric systems, particularly as they pertain to appropriate choices for measuring distance, area, volume, weight, and temperature---and be able to convert between units in the two systems.
• Solve application problems involving distance, area, volume, weight, and temperature.
• Calculate the mean, median, and mode of a set of data.
• Use the range and the standard deviation to describe a set of data.
• Describe or interpret data using frequency distributions, bar graphs, pie charts, and histograms.
• Use percentages to calculate discounts, markups, and sales tax.
• Perform interest computations using formulas for simple and compound interest as related to savings accounts and/or annuities.
• Perform calculations related to car loans, home loans, and credit cards.
• Describe some of the uses of Mathematics in 2-3 fields of the instructor’s choice, such as Art, the Environment, Medicine, Music, and Sports.
• Examine applications of Mathematics in the aforementioned fields, performing calculations appropriate to the specific applications.
