Students march into the graduation ceremony

Commencement 2020

With the continued spread of COVID-19, the college has made the very difficult decision to postpone the scheduled October commencement activities. We do plan to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2020 at a time when we can gather safely.

We know this is a great disappointment to many, especially our recent graduates and their families.  Yet we are confident that most of you will agree that this is a prudent decision that protects you, your families and friends, and our community.

When a date is announced, the plans below will be followed:

In the event of threatening weather conditions, the rain plan published below will be used. Notification to implement the rain plan will be posted on the LaGrange College website and students will be notified by 7:00am on the day of Commencement that the rain plan will be implemented. If you have questions or concerns about the weather and its impact on Commencement, you may call 706.880.8000 or check our website.

Faculty and students are encouraged to check their campus email. If you have any questions regarding these academic events, please contact Gina Thompson in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Please continue to refer to this page throughout the following weeks for FAQs, updates, and new information.

In the event of heavy rain, the college will resort to its official Rain Plan, which involves the following:

  • The venue of the ceremony will be moved to the Callaway Auditorium, located on the south campus, across the street from the football stadium.
  • Commencement Exercises will be divided into two ceremonies. One will begin at 8:30am and the second at approximately 10:45am. Doors will be locked after the first ceremony until 10:25am, allowing everyone to exit. All graduates will be divided into one of the two ceremonies. The list of graduates by ceremony will be posted below.
  • There will be four tickets available to each student for family and friends. If a chance of rain is present throughout the week leading up to graduation, tickets will be available to the Day-undergraduate students in the Student Engagement Office (Smith Hall, Room 124). Graduate and Adult Program students may arrange to pick up tickets with Dr. Jon Ernstberger (contact Dr. Ernstberger at for office hours). There will be no admittance into either ceremony without a ticket.
  • Graduates will line up on the east side of Callaway Auditorium (facing the parking lot and woods) underneath the tents that will be set up just outside the building.
  • Handicap access for Callaway Auditorium will be located on the west side of the building (facing the soccer/lacrosse field).
  • For those who are not able to attend the ceremony in Callaway Auditorium, there will be live webcast streaming of the event available in Dickson Assembly Room in Turner Hall or the Corn Auditorium in the Lewis Library
  • Immediately following both ceremonies, light refreshments will be served in the Callaway Education Building (CEB).

The decision to move Commencement indoors as a consequence of rain will be determined no later than 7:00am on the morning of Commencement.

If the rain plan is activated, two ceremonies will be held inside Callaway Auditorium. Graduates will be divided by the degree they are receiving:

Ceremony One (8:30am):

Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Music
Bachelor of Science

Ceremony Two (10:45am):

Bachelor of Business Administration
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
All graduate degrees

Q: Do we need tickets for our family and friends?
A: No tickets or invitations are needed for Commencement. Come early for a good seat! If the weather forces the relocation of the event to Callaway Auditorium, tickets will be required, and typically (depending on the number of graduates) there are approximately 4-6 tickets available to each graduating student. If the ceremony is moved to the auditorium, tickets will be issued to the students in the days preceding the event.

Q: I have not been able to visit with Jostens when they have been on campus. How can I purchase graduation announcements?
A: If you still need to order announcements and other items for graduation, please visit the Josten's  website.

Live video will be unavailable prior to Commencement. Please check back on Commencement Day.
