Empathetic leadership influences Business student to pursue HR

Junior leads group of students at orientation

Through team environments in Greek Life and Football, junior Tito Hernandez has learned about the importance of displaying compassion on campus and out in the community.

“I like being able to be someone that a person can come to if they have a problem,” he said.

Originally an Accountancy major, Hernandez said he felt his interests aligned more with Marketing & Entrepreneurship and that adding the Human Resources Management minor seemed like a natural fit.

“I had a meeting with my Advisor and realized that my love for leading and speaking would direct me into switching my major into Marketing & Entrepreneurship,” he said. “I was interested in the Human Resources minor because I like managing and interacting with people.”

Among the new programs at LC, the Human Resources Management minor was created for students who are seeking to add a minor to support their major interests, according to Dr. Julian Rierson, Assistant Professor of Business Management.

“It meets a growing need within the community for human resources professionals as new businesses move into the area and existing businesses expand,” he said.

When he is not in class, Hernandez is serving as President of Alpha Delta Gamma, an Orientation Leader, a Student Ambassador and a member of LC Miracle’s Morale Team. Of these commitments, he said that LC Miracle holds a personal connection.

“It is very significant to me because it allows me to give back to a cause that has helped my brother out tremendously with providing care for him these past three to four years,” Hernandez said. “My little brother has influenced me by showing me the ability to never give up. No matter how tired or hurt he is, he still pushes through his disease with a smile on his face.”

When encountering challenges, Hernandez said attacking them head-on is his go-to approach.

“I have been faced with personal and academic struggles, and I learned that diving headfirst into the problem is the best way to fix it,” he said.

During his time at LC, he said Dr. Kerry Kenner, Associate Vice President of Student Experience, Dean of Students and Director of Housing & Student Life, and Kelli Tolbert, Assistant Director of Housing, have been among his trusted mentors to go to for support.

“They have offered guidance to help me shape my future, encouraged me to take on leadership positions to assist in my growth and talked to me when I needed advice,” Hernandez said.

He shared why prospective students should consider LC.

“Students should come to LC because of the community we bring here,” Hernandez said. “The campus community brought me in with open arms. They make sure to check on us and nurture our path toward success.”
