Students at Moshell Learning Center

After six months of renovation work, the Moshell Learning Center and Tutoring Lab opened its doors to students at the start of classes on Monday, August 22, in Lewis Library.

The Learning Center has been in existence since the library was built in 2009, but renovations that began in February have expanded the area by converting the adjacent technical services area of the library into a tutoring lab.

“In the Fall of 2021, President Baxter approached me about turning the space into a tutoring lab,” said Kelly Ansley, Director of Lewis Library. “The Moshell family was approached, and the ideas started coming.”

The new Moshell Tutoring Lab is named after Marie Turner Moshell, HA’17, an advocate and philanthropist who served on the college’s Board of Trustees for 12 years. Marie and her children, Lane Riley, Turner Moshell and Sue Marie Waddell ’08, originally funded the Moshell Learning Center in memory of husband and father William Moshell. The Moshell children provided funding for the renovation to the Moshell Learning Center and Tutoring Lab in honor of their mother’s dedication to the college and commitment to its students.

Students who walk into the Moshell Learning Center and Tutoring Lab will notice a more modern look.

“Due to the generosity of the Moshell family, both the Tutoring Lab and the 24-hour/Moshell Learning Center have brand new flooring, paint and furniture,” Ansley said. “Both spaces have floating whiteboards, in addition to the ones mounted on the wall.”

A popular campus study spot, the learning center features tables and booths, separate study rooms and the Panther Café coffee shop.

Dr. Stacey Ernstberger, Director of the Tutoring Center, said the new lab provides a better learning environment for students.

“The Tutoring Lab is now a separate room accessed through the 24-hour study area,” she said. “There are partitions throughout the space, which ensures a greater level of privacy and focus than in the previous location.”

Students at Moshell LabTo aide in tutoring, students can connect to large monitors in the lab.

Dr. Ernstberger said the Tutoring Center, which opens on August 29, will offer one-on-one peer tutorials in fields including Mathematics, Statistics, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry (General and Organic), Physics, Psychology, Accounting, Problem Solving and Spanish.

Maelie Barcena ’23, a tutor at the Center, said she is looking forward to using the new lab for her private sessions with students.

“I am super excited about the new Moshell Learning Center and Tutoring Lab because it provides us with our own space for tutoring and allows students being tutored to have more focus on them,” Barcena said.

In addition to accepting walk-ins, the Tutoring Center will take appointments during its open hours of 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The center will also have daytime hours available by appointment only.

Students can access the Tutoring Lab from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. The Learning Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Over the summer, the Panther Academic Center for Excellence also moved to the Moshell Tutoring Lab from the first floor of the Callaway Academic Building.

Lindsay Shaughnessy, Director of PACE, said students can now access tutoring, writing, academic coaching, testing and accessibility services in one location.

“Dr. Justin Thurman, Director of the Writing Center, Dr. Ernstberger and I will function together with accommodation services, academic coaching and testing during the day and tutoring in the evening,” Shaughnessy said.

The hours of operation for PACE services are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Group tutoring is also offered Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The conference’s preseason poll was released this week, and the Panthers were picked to finish third out of seven men’s teams.

Covenant, which won the USA South championship in 2021, received five first-place votes and was picked to finish first.

Maryville collected the other two first-place votes and was the number two pick, and LaGrange, Huntingdon, Piedmont, Belhaven and Berea rounded out the poll.

The Panthers finished the 2021 season with a 7-5-1 record, and they went 3-1-1 in their final five games.

The men's soccer team will have their season opener on Friday, Sept. 2 at home against Millsaps.

LaGrange’s women’s soccer team, meanwhile, was picked to finish sixth in the conference.

Women's Soccer Team

Piedmont got five of the nine first-place votes and was first in the poll, and Maryville, Covenant, Huntingdon, Belhaven, LaGrange, Berea, Wesleyan and Agnes Scott completed the poll.

The Panthers are hoping to build on the momentum they established at the close of the 2021 season.

LaGrange won four consecutive games before falling to Maryville in the season finale, and it finished with a 5-6-1 record.

The women's soccer team will have their season opener on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida. Their first home game will be against Oglethorpe University on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Football

The Panthers, who open their season on Sept. 10 at Berry College, have been picked to finish seventh in the USA South.

Huntingdon, which won the conference title with an 8-0 record in 2021, received six of the first-place votes and is first in the poll.

Brevard was picked to finish second, Methodist was third, and conference newcomer Belhaven received two first-place votes and is fourth in the poll.

North Carolina Wesleyan is fifth, and it is followed by Maryville, LaGrange, Southern Virginia, and Greensboro.

The Panthers are looking to bounce back from a tough 2021 season when they went 2-8 overall, and 2-6 in the USA South.

Their first home game will be against Ferrum College on Saturday, Sept. 17.
