Service Saturday litter cleanup

Service essential part of campus life

Almost anywhere you look on campus and around the community, you can see places and people who have been touched by LaGrange College students.

From Servant Scholars to the Student Government Association, Circle K to Leaders Inspired for Tomorrow, the opportunities to help are plentiful.

Dr. Karen Pruett, Associate Dean of Student Development, said service is woven into the fabric of the college.

“As one of our core values, service is integrated throughout the LaGrange College student experience,” she said.

During the 2018-2019 academic year, student organizations (including Servant Scholars) reported almost 4,736 service hours.  Of those, almost 638 service hours were submitted by Greek organizations, and 652 by non-Greek groups.

“The most active of our non-Greek organizations include Campus Circles, Circle K and Wesley Fellowship,” she said.

Every semester, the college hosts a Service Saturday event. In the past, the volunteers have helped clean the shores of West Point Lake and performed landscaping chores at area nursing homes and parks.

Recently, the college partnered with the City of LaGrange’s “Leave It Better Than We Found It” anti-litter campaign for Service Saturdays.

Katie Mercer Van Schoor, City of LaGrange marketing and communications manager, said working with the students has been a joy.

“I love their passion and willingness to get in there and work,” she said.

Recently, Van Schoor visited the campus to discuss volunteer opportunities with the city.

“I told them the city is proud to offer ways for them to get involved,” she said. “They can serve through several areas such monthly litter cleanups, working with the LaGrange Animal Shelter/LaGrange, Troup County Humane Society and the LaGrange fire and police departments.”

Dr. Pruett is appreciative of the community’s willingness to allow students to get involved.

“Service is such an important part of their campus life,” she said. “As our mission statement says, we prepare students to become successful, responsible citizens who aspire to lives of integrity and moral courage. It’s who we are.”

Alumni Giving

‘Tis the season to give thanks, and LaGrange students are thankful for the alumni who support their educational journey with their gifts. If at least 1,140 alumni join us in supporting students by June 30, 2020, it will show how passionate our alumni are about higher education, providing great opportunities for the next year. Go to or call the Development office at 706-880-8039 to make your gift.
