Servant leaders honored

Servant leaders from the campus and the community were recognized Dec. 4 during
LaGrange College’s annual Celebrate the Servant observance.
Those honored were Kaylen Short, student award; Laura Breyfogle, adult award;
Cindi Bearden, faculty award; and Walter Jones, youth award.
Kaylen is a senior religion major from Marietta and is a 2007 graduate of Sprayberry
High School. His volunteer, community, college and church activities include membership
in the North Georgia Conference WITNESS team, lay leadership team at St. Paul United
Methodist Church, Greenville United Methodist Church intern, Theta Alpha Kappa
Religion Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa Service Honors Society. On campus,
Short serves as a work-study for the Religion Department and is a member of the
Wesley Fellowship. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Short of Marietta.
Breyfogle is the mother of two grown children, Sara and Scott, and is the office
manager for Troup Cares. She is an avid supporter of the Sierra Club, DASH, Girl
Scouts of Pine Valley, LaGrange College Lewis Library, Paint the Town and Newcomer’s
Club. She and her husband, Sam, are members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where
Breyfogle serves on several church leadership and service committees.
Bearden has worked for the past year to raise funds to build an orphanage in Uganda,
and serves as a board member for the Agape Total Child Care Orphanage in that country.
She is a volunteer for the Pregnancy Center of LaGrange, and is an associate professor
in the Accountancy Department, having joined the college in 2001. She has more
than 20 years of teaching experience at LaGrange, Birmingham-Southern College and
the University of North Alabama. She is a member of Western Heights Baptist Church
where she serves on the Missions Team, Youth Team and Uganda Team Leader. Bearden
and her husband, Ken, have two daughters, Jessica and Sarah.
Walter is a senior at LaGrange High School and the son of Jared and Alynda Jones
of LaGrange. He is president of Club Red (local Red Cross club for high school
students), member of the LHS chorus, swim and tennis teams, National Honors Society
and Student Council. He volunteers his time to the Red Cross, Twin Cedars Youth
and Family Services, Camp Viola, Samaritan’s Purse, Christmas Cards for Troops,
Chili Cook-Off, and Gold Medal Service Club. He and his family attend LaGrange
First United Methodist Church where he is active in youth ministry activities.
