College to host summer camp

May 8, 2009

College to host summer camp For the second consecutive year, the LaGrange College Education Department will host a three-week summer camp for rising fifth through eighth graders called “Learn2Serve,” where middle schoolers will solve real problems facing the community in the mornings followed by afternoons filled with sports and swimming.

“This year our focus will be on economic issues in Troup County,” said Dr. Alan Crowe, Assistant Professor of Education and director of the camp. “We plan to involve our students in an array of activities designed to teach them how the local economy works and why, even in a downturn, Troup County can have a bright economic future and be an attractive destination for those wishing to relocate here.”

While it will utilize several venues on the College campus, the camp will be headquartered in the Callaway Education Building. There, campers will learn in modern classrooms supported by a cutting-edge technology lab.

Campers also will have access to the full CEB gymnasium. For outside activities, the Nick Allen Pavilion is conveniently situated in a park-like setting near the reserved tennis courts and swimming pools.

Camp Learn2Serve’s program will feature a schedule typically divided into two parts. The first part of each day will focus on a service-learning project. Service Learning is a form of experiential education where students determine what is needed to fix a pressing community problem and then actually implement their innovative solutions.

The second half of the day will be devoted to recreational activities. Each camper will develop physical skills through a variety of group and individual sports activities such as tennis, basketball, volleyball and others.

After a full day of serving, learning and sports, the afternoon ends at the College natatorium, where parents will pick up their children. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, campers will finish the day with a free-swim.

The camp will meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., beginning June 8 and ending June 26. The entire cost for the three-week, full-day program is $225.

More information and applications are available online. Additional questions can be directed to Dr. Crowe or Lindsey Lingenfelter at (706) 880-8588.
