Jan Term offers excursions, exploration, exposition
Jan. 3, 2008
Since 2001, LaGrange College has laid claim to being the only institution in the state that offers January Interim Term, an intensive four-week learning experience designed to encourage students to explore specialized topics outside their majors.
This year’s term provides students an array of subjects to choose from. Ranging in theme from spiritual to scientific, the courses involve traditional lecture formats, experiential learning and overseas travel.
Some students this year will fly to Japan to study architecture or religious art, while others will head to London to learn about Shakespeare on film and stage. Costa Rica will be the destination for those who want to explore animal behavior, and Southern Spain will receive a visit from LaGrange students interested in the art and culture of that region of the world.
For those who chose not to join the jet set, there are plenty of interesting subjects students could ponder without leaving campus
Students have the opportunity to study the principles of sustainability during this year’s term. Astronomy is another subject on tap. Developing undeveloped musical talent is an option—as is the search for contemporary film noir.
In all, LaGrange students are given the option to choose from approximately 50 subjects that make up this year’s January Interim Term, and they will spend a minimum of 30 hours a week plumbing the depths of their courses.
