Jamie Thomas named as Panthers' new head coach

Jan. 27, 2014

Jamie Thomas has been named new head volleyball coach at LaGrange College, according to Athletic Director Jennifer Claybrook.

"We are excited that Jamie will be taking the reins of the college's volleyball program," Claybrook said. "During the process of searching for a new head coach, it became quite clear that she had a strong commitment to our institutional mission combined with great experience and knowledge of the sport.

"Jamie's passion for both the team and a winning program was exceptional. I am confident in her abilities to move Panther volleyball forward."

Thomas has been an integral part of the volleyball team for the past three seasons. She was the graduate assistant coach for two years and this past season served as a volunteer assistant coach while working in the school's Admissions Office.

During the 2013 season, Thomas served as the volleyball team's primary strength and conditioning coach. She also focused on improving players' serving. The team's service aces rose from 160 in 2012 to 185 this past season, while service errors dropped from 195 to 167.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue coaching here at LaGrange," Thomas said, "and I'm especially excited to work closely with Coach Claybrook, Coach Davis and the rest of the athletics department. Their support and confidence in this transition is greatly appreciated.

"My goals are to build a competitive program with a solid focus on academics and to train the already talented group of young women we have here to achieve maximum results."

Thomas came to LaGrange from Frostburg (Md.) State University. The 2011 graduate played four years at Frostburg as the starting right-side hitter.

Thomas helped lead Frostburg State to four consecutive NCAA tournament trips. She was the captain of the 2010 squad that reached the NCAA Division III Sweet 16, finished the season 34-4, and won the Capital Athletic Conference championship. Thomas graduated with the Frostburg State volleyball record for aces in a single match and ranked second in career aces with 237 and 1,532 digs. The Fulton, Md., native received second-team All-Capital Athletic Conference honors during her senior season.

"We are especially pleased to have someone who has demonstrated her passion for student success move into this leadership role," said college President Dan McAlexander. "Jamie's work in both Athletics and Admissions here has shown that commitment.

"We are confident she will champion our mission of preparing students to become successful, responsible citizens who aspire to lives of integrity and moral courage."

Thomas graduated from Frostburg State with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. She served as a strength and conditioning intern at Frostburg, training all of the institution's sports teams, as well as personal clients.

She also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from LaGrange College.
