It's showtime as Homecoming 2012 nears

The curtain is ready to go up for the college’s Homecoming celebration Oct. 5-7.
This year’s theme is “It’s Showtime!”
Festivities will begin at 11:15 a.m. Friday with the Wall of Outstanding Alumni
Awards Forum in the Corn Auditorium at Lewis Library. Join this year’s award recipients
to hear how LaGrange College shaped their lives. They are Karen Faye Bullock ’75,
M’77; Dr. Steven Randall Harris ’88; Dr. Sherry Lynette Thrasher ’01, and Shawn
Gabriel Zwilling ’88, M’91.
The 29th Tom Duckett Golf Tournament sponsored by the Panther Club will tee off
at 9 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Country Club. Last year saw a record number
of participants, and this one looks to be creeping up on that record.
The Class of 1962 will hold its 50th reunion with a reception at the President’s
home at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. in the Bailey Room of Smith Hall.
The party really kicks in at 6 p.m. in downtown LaGrange for Panther Palooza II.
Participants are encouraged to wear red and black. Alumni registration will be
from 6 to 9 p.m.
The event will feature an inflatable slide and other special things for children,
a Zumbathon at 6:30 p.m. on the Chamber of Commerce plaza, speed networking at
6:30 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce classroom and music from disc jockey Alan
Registrants will receive coupons for themselves and a guest for one slice of Mighty
Joe’s Pizza and one scoop of Sugar Smith Café’s ice cream; a complimentary coupon
for either a Panther Palooza airbrush tattoo and a balloon novelty or a Whimzey
hair bling or a make-it-yourself Panther spirit wand.
Sign up at the event to be eligible for a $100 gift certificate from Campus
Exclusives on the Hill. It will be awarded on Oct. 8 at noon on the LaGrange College
Alumni Facebook page. A two-night stay at the Lafayette Garden Inn may be won by
registering for Panther Palooza online by Oct. 3.
Saturday’s events will kick off with the annual 5K Fun Run and 1-mile Walk sponsored
by the LaGrange College Nursing Department. Registration begins at 7 a.m.; Run
and Walk starts promptly at 8 a.m. at the Callaway Education Building. Cost is
$10 per person.
New this year is the Alumni Recognition Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the Dickson
Assembly Room. It will feature an address by President Dan McAlexander followed
by recognition of the inaugural Honorary Alumnus Awards to be given to Nancy Alford,
Speer Burdette and President and Mrs. Walter Y. Murphy.
The Sports Hall of Fame inductees former LC softball coach Larry Thompson Jr.
’85, LC golf coach Lee Richter and former baseball player J.P. Johnston ’02 will
be honored; and the Class of 1962 and other classes in reunion will be recognized.
The women’s soccer team will take the field at 9 a.m. to do battle with the Ferrum
Panthers at the soccer field. It will be followed at 11 a.m. by the men’s soccer
Welcome Home Alumni Registration begins at 9 a.m. and will continue until after
the football game under the white tent at the Dallis Street entrance to Callaway
Auditorium. Alums can pick up red and black pom poms, and help Lewis Library staff
at the Archives tent identify old photos.
Classes in Reunion will be tailgating under the LaGrange College red and black
tents on the grassy area near the white registration tent. Check Homecoming 2012

The 2012 Sports Hall of Fame honorees will be grand marshals of the Student Government
Association Parade, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The SGA will host a pre-game tailgate
in the Callaway Auditorium parking lot. Games, music and light food will
be provided. Attendees are welcome to walk to the game together to show Panther
Come cheer the football team at the Panther Walk at 11:55 a.m. between Callaway
Auditorium and the soccer field.
Gates at Callaway Stadium will open at noon, and the Hall of Fame winners will
officiate at the ceremonial coin toss at 1 p.m. before the Panthers take on the
Averett Cougars. The 2012 Homecoming Queen will be announced during halftime ceremonies.
Visit the newly renovated Broad Street Apartments, home of the LaGrange College
Servant Scholars Program, from 3 to 5 p.m. The apartments were given to the college
by the Callaway Foundation, Inc., which also renovated and furnished them. The
Servant Scholars Program began in the fall of 2012 and it brings students together
for a two-year focus on scholarship directed at addressing community concerns.
The weekend will wind down Sunday with the annual Alumni and LaGrange College
Community memorial service at 11 a.m. in the Chapel, followed by a Sunday brunch
buffet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Pitts Dining Hall. Cost is $9, pay at the door.
Lewis Library will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday
and 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Campus Exclusives on the Hill (formerly the LC Bookstore)
will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday on the Hill.
They also will be selling an assortment of LC items in the Campus Exclusives on
the Hill tent from noon until the end of the third quarter at Callaway Stadium.
At the Hill location, a 1 percent discount will be given for each year since graduation
on all LC items, up to 40 percent discount. Discounts will not be given at the
