September 27 , 2006
This year’s LaGrange College Homecoming offers attendees an event-packed weekend with more than a couple of dozen opportunities for fun and fellowship to choose from, but there’s one item on the agenda that’s been circled in red by almost everyone: Homecoming’s first football game.
The pad popping begins Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. in Callaway Stadium when the LaGrange College Panthers take on the Washington University in St. Louis Bears.
“Everyone is just so excited to have football as a part of our Homecoming tradition,” said Alumni and Family Relations Director Martha Pirkle. “That’s why this year’s Homecoming weekend is themed ‘Get in the Game.’”
Scheduled for Oct. 6-8, Homecoming kicks off Friday afternoon with the Tom Duckett Golf Tournament at Highland Country Club at 1:30. At 3 p.m., a baseball doubleheader against Andrew College gets under way at Cleaveland Field, and at 6 p.m., the volleyball team takes on Emory & Henry in the Callaway Education Building.
Friday evening at 6:30, President and Mrs. Stuart Gulley will join the class of 1956 at Sunny Gables Alumni House for that group’s 50 th reunion dinner.
The Price Theatre curtain rises for “Daughters” at 7:30 p.m. Set in the kitchen of a Brooklyn home, the play examines how four generations of Italian-American women deal with crisis. Performances also are scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Call the Box Office at 706-880-8080 for tickets.
Saturday morning at 7 o’clock, alumni are invited to join in a 5K run or one mile walk through the college’s south campus and the city’s historic Hillside area. The cost is $10 per person. To register, visit the alumni Web page..
From 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the tent in front of Callaway Auditorium will be the Homecoming registration site where attendees can pick up their nametags and spirit ribbons. There also will be face painting and balloons for the kids.
This year’s Homecoming Parade, which begins a 10 a.m., follows a different route than in years past. It begins at Price Theater, turns right onto Forrest Avenue, continues to Dallis Street, takes a left, travels just past the stadium and ends on Elm Street.
Callaway Auditorium will serve as the venue for this year’s Alumni Convocation, which takes place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. At the event, the Class of 1956 will receive recognition and alumni awards will be presented.
During halftime of the 1 p.m. gridiron contest, the parade float winner and banner winner are scheduled to be named, and the 2006 Homecoming Queen will be announced.
Draw the Line, the only Aerosmith cover band endorsed by Aerosmith, caps off the event-filled day with a concert on the Residential Quadrangle. The music starts at 8 p.m., and there is no admission charge for alumni or the general public.
On Sunday at 11 a.m., a memorial service will take place in the LaGrange College Chapel to honor alumni and members of the college community who have died since Homecoming 2005.
The final event occurs at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Student Center Assembly Room where athletes from years past are to be inducted into the LaGrange College Sports Hall of Fame.
