Celebrated scientist will speak at ‘Friends’ event
March 26, 2007
Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning scientist Dr. Edward O. Wilson will be the featured speaker at a special gathering hosted by Friends of the LaGrange College Library on Thursday, April 12. The event includes dinner and starts at 6 p.m. at Best Western Lafayette Garden Inn in LaGrange.
Often described as “the father of the modern environmental movement,” the Harvard professor of biology was named by Time as one of “ America’s 25 Most Influential People.” His Pulitzer Prizes came for his groundbreaking books “Ants” and “On Human Nature.”
“During his lifetime of studying and describing nature, Dr. Wilson has provided for us an understanding of our unique role as part of the natural world and our ability to destroy or preserve the delicate balance of life,” said Dr. Sarah Beth Mallory, Chair of the Biology Department at LaGrange College. “It is indeed an honor to have him here in our community to share his journey of discovery and his wisdom for our future.”
In addition to his books, Wilson has penned more than 400 articles. Over the years, he has received 75 awards recognizing his contributions to science and humanity, and he is the recipient of 27 honorary doctoral degrees from institutions throughout North America and Europe.
During the event, the college also will honor Board of Trustees member Ray C. Anderson, founder of Interface, Inc., for his commitment of time, talent and treasure to LaGrange College. Anderson will be presented the 2007 Fuller E. Callaway, Jr., Award for Lifetime Service to LaGrange College.
“Ray Anderson has long been a leader, innovator and forward thinker in the industrial world, and he has used those same talents to do much good for LaGrange College,” said Buddy Darden, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “I can think of no one more deserving than Ray to receive this honor.”
