Feb. 24, 2014
Matthew Evans has been named new head men’s soccer coach at LaGrange College, according to Athletic Director Jennifer Claybrook.
He comes to LaGrange from Florida College, where he was the head coach for the past four seasons and never had a season record below .500. During his time with the Falcons, he revitalized the program and compiled a record of 33-25.
“Matthew has a proven record of success, and a passion for the game and for the student-athletes,” Claybrook said.
"We are grateful to have a person with his talent and experience join our department. I am excited to see what the future holds.”
Florida College reached the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national semifinals in 2011, finishing with a 10-3 record, the best in school history. In 2013, the Falcons were 8-7, playing a schedule that included opponents from the Sun Conference, one of the best conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
“I am very excited to be named the next head men’s soccer coach at LaGrange,” Evans said. “I grew up in the Atlanta area and, in many ways, this is very much like coming home.
“LaGrange is a great place to be. I love the vision, I love the atmosphere, and I am excited to bring student-athletes to LaGrange who will contribute to this transforming environment, and who will help us on the field, as well.
“I feel very blessed to be named to this position, and I cannot wait to get started.”
Evans also has been coaching the Chargers Soccer Club U16-U19 Girls in Tampa, Fla., since 2012. Last fall, the squad won the 2013 Labor Day Showcase. He also has coached several teams with the Roswell Soccer Club in Roswell, Ga., including U10 Academy Boys, U12 Academy Boys, U12 Academy Girls and U14 Boys Select.
“We look forward to what Matthew will bring to our soccer program and our campus community,” said college President Dan McAlexander. “His passion for his sport and for preparing young men and women to become successful, responsible citizens will be invaluable as we strive to fulfill our mission of transforming the lives of our students and our community.”
Evans graduated with honors from the University of Georgia with a degree in Public Relations in 2007. He holds a master’s in secondary education from the University of Phoenix and is certified in the state of Florida to teach math and physics.
