Read to lead cross country program

Chris Read has been named the new head cross country coach at LaGrange College,
according to Athletic Director Jennifer Claybrook. Read takes over for Matt Donnett,
who now will focus solely on coaching Panther men’s and women’s tennis.
“In the search for filling this position, Chris' knowledge, experience and passion
for cross country were exactly what we were looking for to move this program forward
to the next level in USA South conference and NCAA Division III competition,” Claybrook
Read is working with the LaGrange swim teams as a graduate assistant coach for
the 2013-14 season. His responsibilities include recruiting, planning and implementing
NCAA sanctioned home events, strength and conditioning and travel accommodations.
Read was a four-year letterman on the Panther cross country team. As a freshman,
he received the team’s Coaches Award.
“I am very excited for this opportunity to continue coaching here at LaGrange
College,” Read said. “I look forward to working closely with Coach Claybrook and
the rest of the team coaches during this transition and in the future.
“With rigorous training and hard work, it is my goal to build a men’s and women’s
program composed of scholarly athletes who will be highly competitive within our
Read is a 2013 LaGrange College graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History
and a minor in Spanish. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Arts in Teaching
degree at the college.
“It is gratifying to see one of our own graduates rise to lead our cross country
teams,” said college President Dan McAlexander. “We are confident Chris will bring
his own transforming LaGrange experience to the Panther cross country program.”
