Cultural Enrichment offers range of events
Sept. 10 , 2007
“An Evening With the Georgia Guitar Quartet” on Sept. 25 is one of 70 events that can be found in this year’s Cultural Enrichment brochure.
The average person may not flip through it with the cheerful eagerness of a kid who’s just been handed a Sears Wish Book, but only a Grinch could fail to admit that it’s fun to open up the new Cultural Enrichment brochure and take a peek at the lineup of events the new academic year has to offer.
Initiated in 2002 as a tool to help enhance the intellectual and cultural lives of LaGrange College students, the Cultural Enrichment requirement stipulates that first-year students must earn at least 40 hours of CE credits over their college careers in order to graduate.
Packaged in a burgundy pamphlet that fits nicely in a back pocket, this year’s CE calendar offers a smorgasbord of cultural, intellectual and entertaining treats for students to sample.
“We like to get a variety of programs, from all disciplines,” said Associate Professor of English Dr. John Williams, who, along with Associate Professor of Music Dr. Mitch Turner, was responsible for constructing this year’s calendar. The two professors have worked since May to piece together the 2007-2008 version.
And while the array of programs is impressive, Dr. Williams indicated there is one area he would like to beef up in the future.
“I wish we could get more scientific programs,” he said.
In all, this year’s calendar offers approximately 70 activities to choose from. What follows is only a small sampling of highlights:
On Sept. 11, students can hear Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. John Tures lecture on “Testing the Democracy Promotion Myth.” Later this month, on Sept. 25, the Georgia Guitar Quartet performs in Callaway Auditorium.
October is a busy CE month, with a lecture on the 12th that offers a look at a LaGrange alumna who became a pioneering early developmental psychologist. And, starting on the 25th, there will be several opportunities to enjoy the Theatre’s production of “She Loves Me.”
November features the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra on the 6th and the French film “The Eiffel Tower” on the 15th. “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” is one of the traditional highlights of December, and January presents the opportunity to earn a credit by attending a basketball game.
The National African American Read-In takes place on Feb. 4, and students can participate in a Japanese Tea Ceremony on March 4. Mitch Turner presents “Dracula Remix” on April 22, and May closes out the calendar with a trip to Atlanta to see “The Marriage of Figaro” on the 4th.
