Defining Moment

the Frank & Laura Lewis Library
Frank & Laura LewisA remarkable new library on the LaGrange campus will bear the names of two remarkable people: Frank and Laura Lewis. After a generous lead gift for the building’s construction from Callaway Foundation, Inc., the College and foundation endorsed a move to name the facility for two beloved LaGrange citizens, two College employees—and two librarians.

For the Lewises, books opened doors. The couple met as graduate students at Atlanta University. Amid the great tension of integration in LaGrange, they pursued careers as librarians and dedicated their lives to teaching and literacy.

Raised in Columbus, Ga., Mr. Lewis joined LaGrange College in 1973, serving the institution as library director for 22 years. He was the College’s first African-American faculty member, and later, trustee. He also secured a grant to purchase the first campus computer, and in 1984, he created the Friends of the LaGrange College Library, a thriving association backed by alumni and other supporters.

Mr. Lewis devoted his free time to two things: books and sports. For nearly 40 years, he officiated youth and high school football, baseball and basketball games.

Mrs. Lewis, a native of LaGrange, worked as a librarian first at LaGrange’s Union Street Library and later at LaGrange Memorial Library. A force for good within the community, she became a role model to children, igniting their passion for learning.

Late in her career, Mrs. Lewis worked in Admission at the College. Inspired and motivated by her presence, colleagues remember her as “one of the most loved and reected community leaders and educators in Troup County.”

For four decades, the Lewises volunteered in leadership roles throughout the region. Married for 45 years until Laura’s death in November 2003, they have a son, Jason, who lives in LaGrange with his wife. He continues his family’s legacy of service, working at the Pathways Center as social service technician principal.

In the wake of Mr. Lewis’ death in October 2006, President Stuart Gulley said, “Frank Lewis had a strong faith and held a deep repect for all human beings. LaGrange College is a profoundly stronger and more inclusive community because of Frank Lewis.”
