During the college journey, a student's spiritual outlook and understanding of God may be challenged. To help students during their faith struggles, LaGrange employs a full-time chaplain.
What's a Chaplain?
The chaplain is the "spiritual leader" and minister to the entire college community. The word "chaplain" describes the ministry style of an ordained minister who devotes the majority of their time and effort to developing and maintaining a relational environment for a small congregation. LaGrange's Vice President for Spiritual Life and Church Relations is an ordained United Methodist minister who is available to persons of all faiths to help them sort out and make sense out of life crises. The Vice President for Spiritual Life provides support and counseling for students, faculty and staff members in times of crisis or transition. Through worship programs, group activities, and community service, the Chaplain invites students, faculty and staff members to explore their faith.
In all that is done in Spiritual Life, the goal is to help students, faculty and staff members discover for themselves the values and ideals that they hold most dear and to make sure that those views are fully examined and rooted in the two great commandments of loving God and neighbor. Because of this, much of the chaplain's work is done in talking and listening to people for questions on matters of life, family, God, spirituality, personal crisis, and religious faith on campus and in the world; offering liturgical/sacramental services; rituals to mark life's transitions; assisting faculty and students with personal crises and God's call for their lives, and addressing pressing moral, ethical and theological questions
