Panthers roll past Piedmont in record-setting performance Jan. 20, 2010
LaGrange College snapped a 14-game losing streak to Piedmont College with a 102-80 victory Wednesday at Mariotti Gym. The win upped the Panthers' GSAC record to 5-1 and 10-6 overall. The Lady Lions fell to 5-11 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The Panthers used a record-setting first half to down the Lady Lions for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The Panthers last won 83-70 at Mariotti Gym on Feb. 13, 2002.
In the first half, the Panthers buried the Lady Lions with a barrage of 3-pointers. The Panthers made 11-of-14 of their 3-point shots in the half for a torrid 78.6 percent. They only attempted four 3's in the second half, making a school-record 12th.
The 3-point shooting helped the Panthers roll to a 58-33 halftime lead. It was the most points in a half by the Panthers, eclipsing the 56 scored against Fisk in 2006. The Panthers shot 55.6 percent overall in the half.
Heather Miller led the Panthers with a game-high 18 points. Miller had 14 of her points in the first half. The Panthers had four others in double figures. Stefanie Schuck followed Miller with 14 points, Katie Covington and Cameren Farr each had 12 and Elizabeth Williams had 11. Williams also had five assists.
The Panthers trailed 19-13 with 12 minutes left in the half. They went on a 14-0 run to take a 27-19 lead and never trailed again. The Panthers closed out the first half with a 18-5 run over the final five minutes. Ashley DeFreitas hit the Panthers' last 3-pointer of the half for the 58-33 lead.
The Panthers were never threatened in the second half. Covington hit a pair of free throws to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 82-47, with 12 minutes left. The Panthers led by 34 with three minutes left before the Lady Lions cut the final margin to the 102-80 final score.
The 102 points tied for the third most in a game by the Panthers. The Panthers finished the game with a 56.3 percent shooting percentage, the fourth best ever in a game. The final 66.7 percent 3-point shooting set a school-record for a game.
The Panthers play at Agnes Scott on Saturday in a GSAC game. Game time is 2 p.m.
