Maryville hands Panthers first GSAC loss of season

Maryville College handed LaGrange College its first GSAC loss of the season, edging the Panthers 84-76 at Mariotti Gym on Saturday. The loss dropped the Panthers to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in the GSAC. The Lady Scots stayed perfect in the GSAC at 5-0 and improved to 11-4 overall.

Ashley Hoglund had a career-day for the Panthers. The senior scored a game-high and career-high 23 points, 17 coming in the second half. She hit a career-high seven 3-pointers in the game. Ashley Covington followed Hoglund with 22 points. Cameren Farr added 15 points.

Alison Harmon led Maryville's balanced scoring with 15 points. Paige Sevier added 14 points and Alicia Brown had 12. Brown also had eight assists in the game.

The game had 17 lead changes. Maryville led 34-33 at halftime. The Panthers shot only 29.7 percent in the first half. Covington had 14 of her points to keep the Panthers in the game. Covington and Hoglund combined to hit 4-of-6 from 3-point range in the half.

The Panthers trailed 57-52 with 10:56 left in the game. Hoglund hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Panthers a 58-57 lead. Kia Britton's basket put the Panthers ahead for the last time, 61-60, with 6:57 left.

The Lady Scots went on a 14-3 run over the next three minutes to open up a 73-63 lead. The Panthers got as close as four points twice in the final two minutes. Covington hit a pair of free throws to make it 79-75 with a minute remaining. The Lady Scots hit three free throws in the final seconds to clinch the 84-76 win.

The Panthers host Piedmont in a GSAC game Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m. The two teams are tied for second in the conference with 4-1 records.
