Huntingdon edges Panthers in overtime

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon College edged LaGrange College 73-69 in overtime in a GSAC game Thursday night at Roland Arena. It was the second straight GSAC overtime loss for the Panthers, who finished the regular season 14-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Valeree Williams led the Panthers with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Elizabeth Williams added 15 points and Ashley Hoglund 11.

The Panthers trailed 30-25 at halftime. They led by six in the opening minutes of the game. The Lady Hawks (13-11, 6-5 GSAC) came back and led by as many as eight, 21-13, with 10:41 left in the half.

The Panthers reeled off 10 straight points to retake the lead. Jessica Boler tied the game at 21 and Cameren Farr followed with a layup for a 23-21 lead with 4:37 left. The Lady Hawks rallied to take the lead back by halftime.

In the second half, the game was tied five times and the lead changed hands seven times. Huntingdon led by five, 43-38, but the Panthers came back. Hoglund's basket put the Panthers up 46-45 with 8:21 left.

 

Valeree Williams' layup put the Panthers up 56-54 with 1:05 left. Huntingdon tied the game at 56 with 46 seconds left. Neither team scored the rest of the way as the game went to overtime.

The Panthers never regained the lead in the overtime period. They got within one on three occasions. Melissa Mora's 3-pointer made it 70-69 with 15 seconds left. Huntingdon scored the game's final points at the free throw line for the 73-69 final.
