Panthers open season on road against Millsaps, Mississippi College Nov. 15, 2006
The LaGrange College women's basketball team opens its 2006-07 season on the road against Millsaps College on Friday and Mississippi College on Saturday. Both games will be played at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and Saturday's game starts at 2 p.m. EST.
The Panthers went 9-18 last season. They return all five players who started the majority of last season's games and nine lettermen total. The Panthers have added nine newcomers to fill out the 18-player roster.
Senior LaTessa Taylor was a second team GSAC all-conference selection last season. She led the Panthers in six different categories, including scoring (11.2 ppg), rebounding (6.9 rpg) and assists (2.1 apg). Senior Kellee Scandrett averaged 10.3 points per game last season.
MILLSAPS NOTES: The Majors of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference were 8-17 overall in 2005-06. They finished ninth in conference play with a 3-11 record. The Majors return two starters and have five newcomers. Sophomore forward Crystal Dickerson is the Majors' leading returning scorer. She averaged 8.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season. Mary Bolton is in her first year as head coach of the Majors. This is the fourth meeting between the two schools. LaGrange leads 2-1. The Majors won 67-56 last season at the University of Dallas Tournament. The Panthers last won 63-50 in 2005 at Mariotti Gym.
MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE NOTES: The Lady Choctaws play in the American Southwest Conference. In 2005-06, the Lady Choctaws were 19-6 and tied for first in the East Division of the conference. Head coach Paul Allen Duke is in his 12th season at Mississippi College. He has a record of 203-64 and has the second most wins of any women's basketball coach at the school. The Lady Choctaws return their top scorers from last season. Senior forward Lacey Kennedy led the team in scoring (14.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg). Senior center Natalie Jordan averaged 11.2 points per game. The two teams have met only one time. Mississippi College won 70-44 in 2001 in Clinton, Miss.
