Panthers cruise past Wesleyan

Feb. 7, 2007

The LaGrange College women's basketball team stormed out to a 33-5 lead in the first half and never looked back as the Panthers rolled to a 67-29 victory over Wesleyan at Mariotti Gym on Wednesday evening.  The Panthers improve their record to 12-9 on the year including a 5-5 mark in the GSAC.  The Pioneers dropped their 63rd game in a row and fall to 0-17, 0-9 in the conference.

The Panthers held the Pioneers to a school-record five first-half points as the Panthers scored 33 in the first half led by Valeree Williams with 10 points and five rebounds off 5-of-7 shooting from the floor in nine minutes of play.  They would hold the Pioneers to nine-percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers.

In the second half, the Panthers didn't let up as they went on a 17-4 run to open the second half before coasting the rest of the way.  The Panthers never trailed in the game.

The Panthers were led by Williams and Ebonie Johnson with 10 points each, followed by Cameron Farr and Shanice Cunningham with nine points apiece.  Farr, Williams and Jessica Barba led the Panthers with eight rebounds.  Candice Mullis led the team in assists with four, all in the second half.

The Panthers out rebounded the Pioneers, 63-36 and had a season-high 20 assists.  Senior guard Kellee Scandrett is now tied with fellow senior Lindsey Moore for first-place all-time in steals with 129.

The Panthers will be on the road this weekend as they play back-to-back games against Maryville and Fisk.  The Panthers have never defeated the Scots (0-17) and are 10-5 against Fisk all-time.  The Panthers defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 79-42 on Jan. 7.
