University of the South hands Panthers first loss of the season

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The University of the South pulled away in the second half to down LaGrange College 63-47 on Tuesday night. The Tigers (2-1) got a game-high 23 points from Steffi Renniger to hand the Panthers (2-1) their first loss of the season. It was also the first loss for new Panther head coach Mark Isenhour.

Despite trailing only 29-27 at halftime, LaGrange only led the first five minutes of the first half. Jessica Boler, who led the Panthers with 11 points, scored off an assist from Ashley Hoglund more a 10-6 lead. The Tigers answered three straight 3-pointers, two by Renniger, to take the lead for good, 15-10.

The Panthers fell behind by as many as nine, 26-17, in the half. Shannah Mabry's 3-pointer with five seconds left drew the Panthers within two, 29-27. Mabry had all 10 of her points in the first half.

Sewanee held LaGrange to only six points in the first 10 minutes of the second half to open up a 44-31 lead. The Tigers led by as many as 19 in the second half. The Panthers never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

After hitting 43.5 percent from the field in the first half, the Panthers cooled off to 34.8 percent in the second half. The Panthers had a 44-28 edge in rebounding. Boler and Ashley DeFreitas tied for team honors with seven rebounds each. The Panthers committed 31 turnovers in the game, while the Tigers had only 11.

The Panthers play in the Southwestern/Austin College Tournament in Georgetown, Texas beginning Friday. The Panthers face Southwestern on Friday and Austin on Saturday.
