Panthers cruise past Rust for third straight win Jan. 13, 2007
LaGrange College's women's basketball team cruised past Rust College 84-47 at Mariotti Gymnasium on Saturday. It was the Panthers' third straight win and improved their record to 8-6. The Lady Bearcats fell to 0-10 on the season.
Panther head coach Kelly Britsky was able to play everyone on the 16-player roster. The Panthers had very balanced scoring in the game, with 12 players scoring.
Jessica Barba led the Panthers with her season-high 10 points. Jennifer Penston, Heather Power, LaTessa Taylor, Valeree Williams and Ashley Hoglund all had nine points. Rust's Helen Wright had a game-high 16 points, while teammate Latoya Brown had a game-high 13 rebounds. Taylor led the Panthers with 10 rebounds.
The Panthers never trailed in the game. Rust was as close as 4-2 in the early going. The Panthers led 14-8 seven minutes into the game. Over the next eight minutes, the Panthers outscored the Lady Bearcats 19-5 to take a commanding 33-13 lead. Williams and Penston had 12 of the points during this span. The Panthers led at halftime 44-22.
In the second half, the Rust never got closer than 20 points. Barba had all of her points in the half as the Panthers pulled away. Hoglund scored nine of the Panthers' final 11 points off of three three-pointers. The 84-47 final was the Panthers' largest lead of the game.
The Panthers travel to Spelman College on Wednesday for a GSAC game. They defeated the Jaguars 69-42 in Mariotti Gymnasium on Nov. 29. The Panthers return home on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host Piedmont in another GSAC game.
