GSAC leader Piedmont downs Panthers

DEMOREST, Ga. – Piedmont College opened the game with a big run and went on to a 77-58 win over LaGrange College at the Johnny Mize Athletic Center on Saturday. The loss dropped the Panthers to 9-14 overall and 4-7 in GSAC play. The Lady Lions stayed perfect in conference play, upping their record to 10-0 and 20-3 overall.

Jessica Barba led the Panthers with a game-high double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ebonie Johnson added nine points, while Valeree Williams had eight. Yetta Bailey led Piedmont's balanced scoring with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mandy Beasley had 10 points as 12 different Lady Lions scored in the game.

 

Piedmont never trailed in the game. The Lady Lions scored the game's first 12 points and bolted to a 20-2 lead after the first seven minutes. The Panthers got within 10, 37-27, when Heather Tidwell hit the second of two free throws with 1:31 left in the half. But the Lady Lions scored the final seven points of the half to open up a 44-27 lead.

 

In the second half, the Panthers never got closer than 16 points. Piedmont led by as many as 24 twice in the half. Johnson and Ashley DeFreitas scored the game's final two baskets for the Panthers for the 77-58 final score.

 

LaGrange shot 33.2 percent from the floor in the game, making only 4-of-18 3-point attempts. Piedmont made 6-of-13 3-pointers in the game and shot 40.6 percent from the floor.

The Panthers host Concordia in a non-conference game Monday. The Panthers close out the regular season against GSAC foe Huntingdon on Thursday.
