Panthers drop second straight GSAC game Jan. 20, 2007
Visiting Piedmont College handed the LaGrange College women's basketball team its second straight GSAC loss Saturday at Mariotti Gymnasium. The Lady Lions (9-5, 5-1 GSAC) downed the Panthers (8-8, 2-4 GSAC) 71-62. The Panthers have lost seven of their last 10 games.
Beth Adcock scored a game-high 22 points for Piedmont. Adcock's teammate, Sheena Trimiar, had 21 points. Valeree Williams and Lindsey Moore each had 14 points for the Panthers. Williams tied with teammate Jennifer Penston and Piedmont's Kayla Duncan for game honors with seven rebounds.
The two teams combined for 58 turnovers. The Panthers had 31, 18 coming in the first half. Piedmont enjoyed a 24-9 advantage over the Panthers at the free throw line. The Panthers out rebounded the Lady Lions 41-30 in the game.
The first half was close until the last three minutes. The Panthers led 10-5 in the early going after Heather Power's three-pointer. Moore's jumper put the Panthers up 12-11. It was the last lead of the game for the Panthers. A pair of free throws by Sarah Lane put the Lady Lions ahead to stay 13-12.
The Panthers were within a point on two occasions the rest of the half. Leading 26-23, the Lady Lions went on a 10-2 run to open up a 36-25 lead late in the half. Moore's basket cut the deficit to nine, 36-27, at halftime.
In the second half, the Panthers trailed by seven in the first minute. Piedmont began to pull away, using a 9-0 run to open up a 45-29 lead four minutes into the half. The Lady Lions had their largest lead, 68-49, after Trimiar's basket with 4:15 remaining. The Panthers scored the game's last six points for the 71-62 final.
The Panthers go on the road to Montgomery, Ala. on Wednesday to face Huntingdon in a GSAC game. Tip-off is 6 p.m. CST.
