Panthers Split Weekend Feb. 11, 2007 The women's basketball team split both games this weekend as they fell to the Maryville Scots, 79-57 on Saturday but won 76-62 at Fisk on Sunday. The Panthers are now 13-10 overall and 5-6 in the GSAC.
The Panthers never gained a lead in the contest as the Scots opened the game with a 16-5 run. The Panthers would score off a Lindsey Moore lay-up to make the score, 2-2 with 19:23 in the game and would not get any closer.
The Panthers would respond with a 12-3 run that would put them within two, 19-17 with 10 minutes remaining in the half.
But the Scots countered with a 12-4 run en route to a nine-point lead, 38-29 at the end of the first half. The Scots shot 52 percent from the field including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.
Maryville would storm out the gate in the second half as they would increase its lead to 27 points with 7:57 to go as they would blister the nets, shooting 62 percent, including 57 percent from beyond the arc to give them a comfortable advantage throughout the rest of the game.
The Panthers were led by LaTessa Taylor, who finished with a 14-point, six-rebound, six steal performance. She also led the team with three assists. Lindsey Moore chipped in 11 points and four rebounds for the Panthers.
In Sunday's game against Fisk, the women shot 46 percent from the field for the game and out rebounded the Bulldogs, 40-38 in a 76-62 win.
Senior captain Lindsey Moore scored a career-high 25 points in the win, hitting 9-of-11 free throws and 8-of 13 from the floor. She has now scored over 800 points for her career, placing her third while second in steals with 132, just two behind fellow senior Kellee Scandrett (134). Scandrett is also the school's record holder in three-pointers made (105) and attempted (372). Taylor is right behind them in steals with 123. She also moved up to fourth-place all-time in free-throw attempts with 213.
The Panthers pulled ahead to a comfortable 39-26 lead at halftime and never looked back as Moore would score 16 first half points hitting all five of her shots from the floor while hitting 6-of-7 free throws. The Panthers forced 22 Bulldogs first half turnovers.
In the second half, the Panthers defense would hold Fisk to just 29 percent shooting while the Panthers got hot from beyond the arc, hitting 40 percent from three-point range.
It was a long game, with nearly 50 fouls, but the Panthers earned their 13th victory of the season, which is the most in three years (17 in 2003-04).
The Panthers will be at home on Wednesday for Senior Night, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. against Huntingdon College. The Panthers defeated the Hawks, 72-57 on Jan. 24.
