Maryville pulls away to hand Panthers fifth straight loss

Maryville College pulled away in the closing minutes to beat LaGrange College 63-49 at Mariotti Gym on Saturday in a Great South Athletic Conference game. The loss was the fifth straight for the Panthers, now 5-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Maryville improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the GSAC.

Kellee Scandrett led the Panthers with 14 points, 12 coming on three-pointers. LaTessa Taylor had a double-double of 10 points and a game-best 16 rebounds. Kim Seal led Maryville with a game-high 16 points.

The Lady Scots led 28-19 at halftime. The two teams combined for 37 turnovers in the first half, with the Panthers committing 20. Maryville never trailed in the game, scoring the first six points of the game. The Lady Scots led by as many as 12, 28-16, in the first half. A three-pointer by Scandrett cut the deficit to nine, 28-19, at halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers quickly fell behind by 14 in the first four minutes. They chipped away at the Lady Scots' lead and trailed 44-38 after Heather Power's basket with nine minutes left.

Trailing 52-40 with less than six minutes remaining, the Panthers reeled off eight straight points to get within four. Scandrett finished the spurt with a steal and a basket at the other end to make it 52-48 with 3:25 left.

The Panthers did not get closer the rest of the way. The Lady Scots scored nine of their last 11 points at the free throw line to put the game away. Maryville finished the game with a 20-6 advantage at the free throw line.

The Panthers host Fisk in a non-conference game Sunday beginning at 2 p.m.
