Huntingdon ends Panthers season with last second win Feb. 26, 2008
MONTGOMERY, Ala. LaGrange College's season ended with a 79-77 loss to Huntingdon College in a GSAC Championship Tournament first round game at Roland Arena on Tuesday. Lori Bonds hit two free throws with 0.8 second left in the game to give the Lady Hawks the win.
The fifth-seeded Panthers ended their season 11-15, while Huntingdon upped its record to 15-11. The fourth-seeded Lady Hawks will face top-seeded Piedmont in the semifinals Friday at Piedmont College.
The Panthers had trailed 75-71 with 3:10 left in the game. Cameren Farr's 3-pointer cut the deficit to one and Jessica Boler's layup put the Panthers up 76-75 with two minutes left. Ashley DeFreitas hit one of two free throws to make it 77-75 with 36 seconds left.
Huntingdon came down and tied the game on Patsy Slater's layup. The Panthers got the ball back with 27 seconds left and played for the final shot. But Valerie Williams had the ball go off her foot with six seconds left.
The Lady Hawks rushed the ball down the court. Bonds tried a jumper with time winding down and was fouled by DeFreitas with less than a second remaining. She calmly sank both free throws to send Huntingdon into the semifinals.
Bonds led all scorers with 27 points. Jessica Boler led LaGrange with 23 points. Farr and Ashley Hoglund had 14 points each for the Panthers.
It was the final game for seniors Jessica Barba, Shannah Mabry and Jennifer Penston.
