Hendrix tops Panthers 70-61

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Hendrix College got a combined 45 points from Chelsea White and Christine Byler in downing LaGrange College 70-61 on Saturday in Mallory Gym. The loss was the second straight for the Panthers, now 3-5.

White led all scorers with 25 points for the Warriors (6-2). Byler added 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Jessica Boler led LaGrange with 13 points, while Ashley DeFreitas had 12.

 

Hendrix led 38-24 at halftime. The Warriors, who never trailed in the game, jumped out to a 14-3 lead to start the game. The Panthers cut the deficit to eight, 32-24, with two minutes left in the half on a basket by Boler. Hendrix scored the final six points of the half to take a 14-point lead at the half.

Byler scored inside to give Hendrix its biggest lead of the game, 47-29, three minutes into the second half. Trailing 51-35, the Panthers put together a run to get back into the game.

 

Over a three-minute span, the Panthers went on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to six. Cameren Farr and Ebonie Johnson started the spurt with back-to-back 3-pointers. DeFreitas' layup finished the run to make it 53-47 with 8:50 left.

It was as close as the Panthers would get. The Warriors eventually built a 13-point lead with three minutes left. DeFreitas made it a 68-61 game with a jumper with 45 seconds left. White and Byler each hit a free throw for the Warriors for the 70-61 final score.

 

The Panthers take on Rhodes College on Sunday in Memphis. They return home Dec. 30 to face the University of Dallas.
