Panthers outlast Atlanta Christian Nov. 27, 2006
The LaGrange College women's basketball team improved to 3-1, beating Atlanta Christian College 84-74 at Mariotti Gym on Monday. The Panthers got a season-high 20 points from senior LaTessa Taylor, (pictured) while having three other players in double figures.
The Panthers forced 33 turnovers in the game, while giving the ball up 23 times. The two teams were called for 43 fouls in the game, 28 coming in the second half. The Chargers (4-6) had three players foul out. The Panthers' bench had a commanding 41-9 advantage in the game. Kellee Scandrett had 13 points off the bench for the Panthers.
The Chargers' led only once, that coming on the first basket of the game. The game was tied twice, the last at 22 midway through the first half. The Panthers outscored the Chargers 22-6 the rest of the way to lead 44-28 at the half. Shannah Mabry had seven of her 10 first half points in this stretch.
The Panthers took their largest lead, 48-28, early in the second half. The Chargers made a late push to close the gap. Raileen Patterson's lay up cut the Panthers' lead to 81-74 with less than a minute remaining. A free throw by Valeree Williams and two more by Jennifer Penston sealed the win.
The Chargers' Brittany Smith led all scorers with 24 points. Patterson followed with 18. Heather Power had 12 points, while Mabry finished with the 10 first half points.
The Panthers host Spelman on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. It is the GSAC opener for both schools.
