Maryville uses big first half to down Panthers Feb. 9, 2008
MARYVILLE, Tenn. Maryville College used a big first half to down LaGrange College 67-53 in a GSAC game Saturday. The loss left the Panthers 8-13 overall and 3-6 in conference play. The Lady Scots remained in second place in the GSAC with a 7-2 mark and improved to 12-9 overall.
Jessica Boler led LaGrange with 12 points. Ebonie Johnson and Jennifer Penston each had eight points. Johnson had a game-high nine rebounds. Jessica Barba, the Panthers' leading scorer and third in the GSAC, was held to seven points. Maryville's Jeanna Dalton led all scorers with 13 points.
The Panthers led briefly on two occasions in the early going of the game. Johnson put the Panthers up 6-5 with a jumper with 15 minutes left in the first half. The Lady Scots held the Panthers to just four points over the next eight minutes to open up a 24-10 lead. Maryville maintained the lead the rest of the half, to go up 33-19 at the break.
In the second half, the Panthers got no closer than 13 points. Katie Saxe's jumper gave the Lady Scots their largest lead, 52-32, with seven minutes remaining. Melissa Mora's 3-pointer closed out the Panthers' scoring with a second left for the 67-53 final score.
The Panthers host Wesleyan in a GSAC game Wednesday.
