Maryville uses second half rally to down Panthers

Maryville College rallied in the second half to down LaGrange College 67-59 on Saturday at Mariotti Gym in a GSAC game. The loss ended the Panthers' two-game winning streak and dropped them to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Maryville upped its record to 3-1 in the conference and 8-7 overall.

Katie Saxe scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to spark Maryville's come back. She also had a team-high 10 rebounds. Natalie Munday had 12 points and Alison Harmon 10 for the Lady Scots.

Jessica Barba was the only Panther in double-figures. She finished with a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Shannah Mabry and Ashley DeFreitas each had eight points.

 

The Panthers could not hold on to a slim 28-25 halftime lead in the second half. Ashley Hoglund's 3-pointer broke a 32-32 tie four minutes into the half. But the Lady Scots went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 43-35 lead. Jeanna Dalton's 3-pointer gave the Lady Scots their first lead of the game, 37-35.

 

The Panthers answered Maryville's run with one of their own to tie the game. DeFreitas hit a pair of free throws to end an 8-0 run to tie the game at 43 with 11:28 remaining. Mabry started the spurt with a basket off an assist from Jennifer Penston.

 

The two teams swapped leads over the next seven minutes. Ebonie Johnson hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game for the last time at 56 with 4:04 left. Saxe answered with a 3-pointer to give the Lady Scots the lead for good, 59-56. Maryville used the free throw to put the game away, as the Panthers went scoreless over the final two minutes.

 

The Panthers go on the road Wednesday against Agnes Scott in a GSAC game. Agnes Scott won the first meeting 76-70 in double overtime on Jan. 4 in LaGrange.
