LaGrange women travel to Tennessee for weekend games

The LaGrange College women's basketball team (12-9, 5-5 GSAC) goes on the road to Tennessee for weekend games with Maryville and Fisk. The Panthers will face Maryville on Saturday in a GSAC game and Fisk in a non-conference tilt Sunday. It will be the second meeting of the year against both schools. Maryville (17-3, 7-1 GSAC) defeated the Panthers 63-49 at Mariotti Gym on Jan. 6. The Panthers defeated Fisk 79-42 on Jan. 7 at Mariotti Gym.

THE COACHES
LaGrange's Kelly Britsky is in her eighth season as the Panthers' women's head coach. She has a career record of 82-123. Britsky guided the Panthers to a 17-11 record during the 2001-2002 season that included a trip to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament.

Britsky played volleyball and softball for the Panthers while earning a degree in History in 1993 and a Masters in Education in 1999. She stayed on as an assistant coach in 1994 when the Panther softball team won a national championship. She left LaGrange for three years to coach basketball, softball, and track at Perry High School in Perry, Ga. before returning in 1997.

Maryville's Jeff Pardue is in his first season as a head coach. He was an assistant coach for the

LaGrange College men's team during the 1992-93 season. Before coming to Maryville, Pardue was the assistant men's and women's basketball coach at Lees-McRae College. He was also an assistant at Coastal Carolina.

ABOUT THE LADY SCOTS
Maryville has reeled off eight straight wins since their only GSAC loss to Piedmont on 1/7. During the streak, the closest margin of victory has been 11 points (67-56 vs. King). Senior Summer Dalton has averaged almost 17 points per game during the streak. She had a team-high 19 points in a 91-46 win over Fisk on Wednesday. Dalton leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points per game. She is second in the GSAC in scoring. Dalton led the GSAC in three-point field goal percentage (.428) and three-point shots made (59) going into the Fisk game. She is ninth in the NCAA Division III stats averaging 3.0 per game. As a team, Maryville leads the GSAC in three-points shots made per game and is third nationally. Senior guard Beth Reed leads the conference and is fourth in NCAA Division III in assists, averaging 6.5 per game. Junior guard Melissa Uner leads the GSAC and is eighth in NCAA Division III in steals, averaging 4.1 steals per game. Reed is second to Uner in the conference and 15th nationally.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS
The Panthers stormed out to a 33-5 lead in the first half and never looked back as they rolled to a 67-29 victory over Wesleyan at Mariotti Gym on Wednesday. The five points scored by the Pioneers was the fewest by an opponent in a half. The Pioneers shot nine percent and turned the ball over 17 times in the half. Valeree Williams and Ebonie Johnson led the Panthers with 10 points each. LaTessa Taylor continues to lead the Panthers in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. She is ninth in the GSAC in those categories. Taylor is fourth in the conference in steals and 56th nationally, averaging 2.95 per game. While Maryville leads the GSAC in three-point shots made, the Panthers are the toughest in the conference against the three-point shot. Opponents are making less than 20 percent of their three-point shots against the Panthers.

FIRST MEETING VS. MARYVILLE
Maryville pulled away in the closing minutes to beat the Panthers 63-49 at Mariotti Gym on 1/6. The loss was the fifth straight overall for the Panthers and 17th straight to the Lady Scots.

Scandrett led the Panthers with 14 points, 12 coming on three-pointers. Taylor had a double-double of 10 points and a game-best 16 rebounds. Kim Seal led Maryville with a game-high 16 points.

The Lady Scots led 28-19 at halftime. The two teams combined for 37 turnovers in the first half, with the Panthers committing 20. Maryville never trailed in the game, scoring the first six points of the game. The Lady Scots led by as many as 12, 28-16, in the first half. A three-pointer by Scandrett cut the deficit to nine, 28-19, at halftime.

FIRST MEETING VS. FISK
The Panthers cruised to an easy 79-42 win over Fisk at Mariotti Gymnasium on 1/7 stopping a five-game losing streak. Head coach Kelly Britsky played everyone on her 16-player roster. The Panthers had 13 different players score in the game. Williams led the Panthers with 14 points, while Lindsey Moore added 12. The Panther reserves scored 50 points in the game. The Panthers never trailed in the game. The Panthers led by 20, 39-19, at halftime. The Panthers forced 23 turnovers by the Lady Bulldogs in the first half. Fisk finished the game with 40 turnovers. It was the most turnovers by a Panther opponent this season.

RECORDS WATCH – Taylor needs eight more steals to break Kellee Scandrett's record of 69 set last season. Scandrett needs eight points to move into fourth place on the career points list.
