Panthers go winless at Alaska tournament

ANCHORAGE, Alaska- LaGrange College went winless at the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational hosted by the University of Alaska-Anchorage. The Panthers went 0-4 in opening their 2006 season. The Panthers played two NCAA Division II teams and an NAIA team in the tournament.

The Panthers fell 3-0 on Friday in their season opener to the host Seawolves. The Panthers were led by six kills and six digs from Sara Newland. The Seawolves claimed control early in each game using a 16-2 advantage in service aces and a .194 to .020 edge in hitting percentage.

The Panthers lost to Briar Cliff (Iowa), the eventual tournament champion, by a 3-0 score in their final match Friday. On Saturday, they lost Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) twice by 3-0 scores. The second loss to Notre Dame de Namur came in the consolation match. Kiley Kirkpatrick led LaGrange with six kills each against Briar Cliff and in the first match with Notre Dame de Namur. Lisa Burgee had a team tournament-high eight kills in the consolation match.

For the tournament, Kirkpatrick led the Panthers with 23 kills, while Burgee had 21 and Newland 19. Grace Burgess had a team-high 48 digs in the tournament. Britny Greensage had seven total blocks in nine games.

The 0-4 start is the first for the Panthers since records were kept beginning with the 1989 season. The Panthers return to the floor against Oglethorpe University in Atlanta on Sept. 6. Match time is 7 p.m.
