Panthers sweep Spelman to even record Oct. 23, 2007
LaGrange College swept visiting Spelman College 3-0 in a GSAC match at the CEB Gym on Tuesday. The Panthers evened their season record at 11-11 and improved to 3-6 in the GSAC. The Jaguars (6-19, 1-9 GSAC) lost their sixth straight match.
Lisa Burgee had a career-high 14 kills to lead the Panthers. She tied teammate Britny Greensage for the season-high in kills in a match. Kayla Black had her second straight double-double and seventh of the season. She had team-highs in assists (30) and digs (11).
LaGrange took the first game 30-22. Spelman scored the game's first three points to take a quick lead. The Panthers put together an 8-0 run to go up 11-5. Jessica Boler had a pair of kills and Yvette Sanchez a pair of service aces during the run. The Jaguars answered with an 8-0 run of their own to go up 16-14. Spelman still held a 20-16 lead when the Panthers took control of the game. The Panthers scored 14 of the last 16 points to win the game. Burgee had back-to-back kills to put the Panthers ahead to stay, 22-21. Boler and Kayla Black combined on a block to end the game.
The Panthers edged the Jaguars 30-28 in the second game. After an early 5-5 tie, the Panthers trailed only once the remainder of the game. Spelman stayed close, as the Panthers largest lead at any time was five points. The Jaguars led 18-17, but the Panthers took advantage of an attack error by the Jaguars and got a service ace from Heather Tidwell to go ahead for good, 20-18. The Jaguars held off three straight game points after falling behind, 29-25. Boler ended the game with a cross court kill to the corner.
LaGrange closed out the match with a 30-22 win in game three. Boler broke a 9-9 tie with a short dink shot and the Panthers never trailed again. They had their biggest lead, 26-17, when Casey Craig's shot rode the top of the net before dropping in for a point. Craig closed out the game and the match with a push shot to the back corner.
The Panthers host Agnes Scott on Friday in their final GSAC regular season game. The match begins at 7 p.m.
