Panthers sweep Spelman

LaGrange College's volleyball team tuned up for the upcoming GSAC Volleyball Weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Spelman on Wednesday at the CEB Gym. The Panthers upped their season record to 8-12 overall and 4-3 in GSAC play. Spelman remained winless, falling to 0-16 and 0-7 in the conference.

 

Senior outside hitter Niki Metcalf paced the Panthers. She recorded a double-double of a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs. Fellow senior Megan Moore added eight kills and 14 assists. Kayla Black had a team-high 16 assists, while Grace Burgess and Sarah Newland had 10 digs each.

 

The Panthers spotted the Jaguars an early 4-0 lead in the first game. The Panthers took a 9-8 lead but Spelman came back to go up 17-16. With the score tied at 18, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run and went on to a 30-19 win. Metcalf had seven of her kills in the game.

In the second game, the Panthers broke an early tie and went up 13-9. They led by as many as 10, 25-15, only to see the Jaguars rally. Spelman got within three points on two occasions as the Panthers hung on for a 30-26 win.

The Panthers raced to a big lead in the final game. They never trailed in the game and led by as many as 16, 23-7. Spelman never got closer than 10 as the Panthers took the game and match with a 30-19 win.

 

The Panthers face Maryville and Agnes Scott on Saturday at Maryville. They finish the weekend against Piedmont. The Panthers play their final home match Wednesday, Oct. 25. It will be Senior Night.
