Maryville survives Panthers' comeback in GSAC semifinals

Maryville College survived LaGrange College's comeback for a 3-2 win in the semifinals of the GSAC Championship Tournament on Friday in the CEB Gym. The loss ended the season for the Panthers (13-13), while the Lady Scots (19-12) advanced to the finals for the eighth straight year.

The top-seeded Lady Scots took the first two games of the match 30-18 and 30-24. The Panthers came back to tie the match with 30-26 and 30-24 wins in the third and fourth games. Maryville controlled the fifth and deciding game, winning 15-5 to take the match.

Sarah Newland led the Panthers with her second straight double-double. She had a career-high 13 kills to go with 12 digs. Kiley Kirkpatrick had 10 kills, while Britny Greensage added nine. Greensage had a team-high seven total blocks. Kayla Black also had a double-double with 39 assists and 15 digs.  Grace Burgess had a team-high 24 digs.  

The Panthers had reached the semifinals with a 3-1 win over Spelman (6-21) in a first round match earlier in the day. The Panthers took the first game 30-17. Spelman tied the match with a 30-26 win in the second game. The Panthers took the final two games 30-18 and 30-17 to win the match.

Newland had her first career double-double in the match. She had a game-high 11 kills and added 18 digs. Greensage, Jessica Boler and Jennifer Fields all had eight kills. Boler had a .615 hitting percentage in the match. Black also had a double-double with a career-high 43 assists and 15 digs.
