Huntingdon ends Panthers' winning streak at four Oct. 3, 2007
Huntingdon College ended LaGrange College's winning streak at four matches with a 3-0 sweep Wednesday night at the CEB Gym. The Panthers saw their overall record drop to 7-7 and 2-4 in the GSAC. Huntingdon (9-8, 4-2) extended its winning streak to six and swept the regular season series from the Panthers. The Lady Hawks won the first meeting 3-1 on Sept. 18 in Montgomery, Ala.
Jessica Boler's eight kills and five total blocks led the Panthers. Sara Newland had seven kills and Britny Greensage had six. Kayla Black had a double-double with team highs in assists (15) and digs (20).
In the first game, the Panthers scored the first point, but Huntingdon reeled off four straight points. The Panthers took their last lead, 7-6, when the Lady Hawks hit a return into the net. Huntingdon broke a 9-9 tie with five straight points and never trailed again. The Panthers never got closer than four points the rest of the way. Huntingdon built its largest lead, 27-18, when Greensage's attempted kill went long. The Panthers rallied briefly with four straight points to make it 27-22. Moriah Legvold closed out the game for the Lady Hawks with a kill after a long rally for the 30-24 final.
Huntingdon jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second game. After a time out, the Panthers stormed back. They went on a 12-3 run to take a 15-13 lead. Boler's block tied the game for the Panthers at 13-13. Greensage put down a kill to end the run. A service error by the Lady Hawks tied the game for the last time at 17-17. Kayla Schuran's kill put the Lady Hawks ahead to stay, 18-17. After Boler's kill got the Panthers within three, 23-20, the Lady Hawks scored seven of the last eight points for the 30-21 win.
Huntingdon closed out the match in the third game. The Lady Hawks ran out to a 14-5 lead. The Panthers responded with a 7-0 run to get back in the game. But the Panthers could only get within two points on three more occasions, the last at 22-20. The Lady Hawks scored the last three points to win the game 30-23.
The Panthers host a doubleheader Saturday. The Panthers play Methodist University at 12:30 p.m., followed by a GSAC match against Piedmont College at 4:30.
