Panthers finish GSAC schedule with sweep of Agnes Scott

LaGrange College ended its GSAC schedule with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Agnes Scott at the CEB Gym on Friday night. The Panthers upped their conference record to 4-6, while improving to 12-11 overall. Agnes Scott slipped to 5-15 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

LaGrange took the three games by scores of 30-23, 30-16 and 30-18. The Panthers trailed only twice during the match, both times after the Scotties took the game's first point.

The Panthers had a balanced attack. Jessica Boler led the team with six kills. Sarah Newland, Britny Greensage, Kiley Kirkpatrick and Jennifer Fields all had five. It was the first match back for Kirkpatrick, who had been sidelined since Sept. 16. Newland led the Panthers with 20 digs, while Kayla Black and Megan Waycaster each had 12 assists.

The first game featured several runs by both teams. The Panthers opened up a 6-1 lead to start the game and eventually led 20-12. The Scotties reeled off seven straight points to cut the deficit to one, 20-19. The Panthers got a kill from Lisa Burgee and a service ace from Black to stop the Scotties' run. The Scotties answered with three quick points to tie the game at 22. The Panthers came back to score seven of the final eight points to take the game. Boler had four of her six kills in the game.

LaGrange never trailed in the second game. Agnes Scott tied the game briefly at 4-4 and only trailed 8-7 when the Panthers began to pull away. The Panthers gradually increased their lead to 20-11. The Scotties never got closer than six points the rest of the way. The Panthers finished the game with a 9-1 run. Greensage had all five of her kills in the game.

The Panthers closed out the match in the third game. Agnes Scott stayed close in the early going, trailing 9-7. The Panthers went on a 10-1 run to build a 19-8 lead. The Scotties never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The Panthers close out the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 30 at home against Oglethorpe. The match starts at 7 p.m. It will be senior night
