Panthers split with Emmanuel

The Panther tennis teams split matches with Emmanuel College in LaGrange on Thursday.  The Panther women won 5-4 to defeat Emmanuel for the second time this season.  They improved their season record to 3-7 (1-1 GSAC).  The men lost to the Lions 1-8, dropping their record to 1-6 (0-1) on the year.

The women's team started the day by sweeping all three doubles matches.  Sara Foshee and Becky Johnson won 8-2 at #1.  Jessica Shaver and Rachel Watson teamed up at #2 doubles to take the match at 8-4.  The Panthers won the #3 doubles match by forfeit.

The #6 singles match was conceded to the Panthers by forfeit giving the Panthers a 4-0 lead entering singles competition.  The Lady Lions fought hard, taking four of five singles matches to even the score at four all.  Johnson provided the match-clinching victory at #2 singles, defeating Ashley Bartel 6-0, 6-3.  Shaver took her #3 match into a third set but lost 6-10 in a super-tiebreaker.

The LaGrange men's team struggled against the Lions, grabbing just one match victory on the day.  Freshman Blake Craft provided the lone win for the Panthers, defeating Colby Phillips at #1 singles.  Craft fought hard through three sets to finish 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.  It was Craft's first collegiate singles victory.

The Panther women will travel to Atlanta, Ga. on Tuesday, March 24 to take on GSAC opponent Spelman College at 3 p.m.  The men's next match will be Friday, March 27 in Maryville, Tenn. versus GSAC rival Maryville College at 3 p.m.
