
Panthers' season ends with loss to Salisbury at NCAA regional May 8, 2009
SALISBURY, Md. Second-seeded Salisbury ended LaGrange College's 2009 season with a 3-1 win Friday at the NCAA Division III Salisbury, Maryland First Round Tournament. The Panthers finished the season with a 25-21 record.
The Panthers were playing in their third straight NCAA tournament. They won the Great South Athletic Conference Championship Tournament for the third straight year also. The game marked the final one for the Panthers' lone senior, Kristi Underwood.
Kristen Woodard (10-2) started and took the loss for the Panthers. She allowed all three runs, only two were earned, in five innings of work. Woodard allowed five hits and did not walk or strike out a batter. Danielle LaDuron threw two scoreless innings of relief.
Kelsey Mills went the distance for the host Sea Gulls (35-5). Mills allowed only three hits, walked four and struck out five. She upped her season record to 14-2.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the first inning. Holly Hazelwood walked with one out. Hazelwood stole second and moved over to third on a passed ball. Katie Ison drove in Hazelwood with a two-out single to center for a 1-0 lead.
Salisbury, ranked 11th nationally, came back with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Jen Cahall drove in the first run with a single. Kristin Lord, who reached on an error earlier in the inning, scored on Meaghan O'Gara's fly out to center to put the Sea Gulls in the lead.
The Sea Gulls added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Cahill opened the inning with a base hit to right field. She came around to score on Brittany Lounge's two-out single to go up 3-1.
The Panthers had at least a runner on in every inning but the second inning. In the sixth inning, Hazelwood opened with a bunt single and stole second with two outs. Underwood walked but Mills got Marcie Wallace to hit into a force play at third to retire Hazelwood and end the inning.
