
Panthers have 10 named to all-GSAC teams April 28, 2009
The Great South Athletic Conference announced its softball awards Friday in ceremonies at the conference's tournament at the LC Softball Complex. LaGrange College swept the individual awards and placed a total of four players on the all-conference team. The Panthers also had three selected as all-freshmen and four earn all-academic honors.
Junior outfielder Holly Hazelwood (LaGrange, Ga.) and sophomore outfielder Katie Ison (Brooks, Ga.) were named GSAC co-Players of the Year. Sophomore Katie Hein (Marietta, Ga.) was named the GSAC Pitcher of the Year.
Hazelwood leads the team and the GSAC with a .455 batting average. She also leads the team in on base percentage (.486), tied for runs scored (33), hits (61), tied for at-bats (134), tied for games played (44) and tied for games started (43). In the GSAC, she leads in hits and is tied for runs scored, while second in on-base percentage and total bases (64).
Ison leads the team and the GSAC in home runs with seven and in RBIs with 31. She is second on the team with a .373 batting average. Ison also leads the team in slugging percentage (.627), tied for runs scored (33), doubles (9), tied for triples (2), total bases (84), stolen bases (13), total plate appearances (148) and tied for at-bats (134). In the GSAC, she is second in slugging percentage, tied for first in runs scored, second in hits (50), tied for second in doubles, first in total bases, first in total plate appearances and second in at-bats.
Hein led the team in pitching during the regular season. She was 8-6 overall with a 2.91 earned run average. In GSAC games, Hein was 5-0 with a 1.81 earned run average. She led the team in innings pitched (90-1/3), strikeouts (71) and started games started (16). As a batter, Hein was third on the team with a .323 batting average. She had a home run and was second on the team with 22 RBIs.
Sophomore Kristen Woodard (Gainesville, Ga.) was selected to the all-conference team as a pitcher. During the regular season, Woodard was 6-1 with a 2.95 earned run average and led the team with 18 appearances. In the GSAC tournament, she went 4-0 with a 0.58 earned run average and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
   Becca Abernathy (Pine Mountain, Ga.), Olivia McGehee (Duluth, Ga.) and Marcie Wallace (Marietta, Ga.) were selected for the GSAC All-Freshman team. Abernathy batted .312 in 30 games with 12 RBIs. McGehee played in 43 games with 38 starts. She batted .266 and was a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen bases. Wallace batted .262 in 34 games with five RBIs and tied for the team lead with two triples.
    Hein, sophomore Cameron Johnson (Charleston, S.C.), sophomore Danielle LaDuron (Buford, Ga.) and senior Kristi Underwood (Gainesville, Ga.) earned all-academic honors. To receive all-academic honors, a student-athlete must have a 3.25 GPA or better and must be a sophomore academically or higher. This is Underwood's second year on the all-academic team.
