Panthers Sweep Spelman
March 20, 2007
Valeree Williams went 7-for-7 and scored seven runs as the Panthers defeated the Spelman Jaguars, 12-2 and 17-2 to improve their record to 14-6 overall and 7-1 in the GSAC, which is good enough for second-place in the conference. Spelman drops to 4-10 and 0-4 in GSAC Play.
Kim Woodard led off the first game with her second home run of the season to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead. Later in the first, Williams hit a single and scored on Kellee Scandrett's triple to make it 2-0. It was Scandrett's 100th RBI of her career.
In the second inning, Jennifer Knight led off with a single up the middle and scored on Amanda Jones' double to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. Jones scored on an infield hit by Dawn Smith to make it 4-0.
In the third, Williams led off with a single and was brought in by Dicie Holland to score her second run of the game, to make it 5-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Spelman scored two runs off three hits, with both runs coming off a throwing error to close the deficit to 5-2.
In the fourth, Woodard and Chloe Turnipseed scored on Kristi Underwood's (pictured above) two-run single. Williams drove in Underwood with a single up the middle and scored on a sacfice fly by Scandrett to give the Panthers a 9-2 lead. Woodard drove in Knight and Smith with a double over the centerfielder to give the Panthers an 11-2 lead.
Megan Henry got her sixth win of the season, striking out two while allowing three hits. She is one strikeout shy of 100 for her career. Hayley Hanson pitched two scoreless innings. Hanson had a three-pitch one-two-three fourth inning and threw a strike every pitch she threw in both innings.
LaGrange had 16 hits in the first game. Williams led the Panthers, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Woodard was 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBI and nearly hit for the cycle, with a single, double and a home run. Scandrett had three RBIs with two sacrifice flies and a single.
The second game started as Woodard and Leah Flowers each singled. They both stole a base and eventually scored on passed balls to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Woodard's stolen base passed Jennifer Brown for second all-time in that category with 46 for her career. The Panthers scored five more runs to give them a commanding 7-0 lead after the first inning.
In the second inning, Williams led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Holly Hazelwood's shot to centerfield and the resulting collision by the outfielder, scored Kayla Yeargin to give the Panthers a comfortable 9-0 lead.
The third inning saw heads-up base running from Woodard and Flowers. After both reached on base hits, Flowers took second while Woodard stole home off the throw to make the score 10-0. Knight drove in Flowers with a sacrifice to give the Panthers another run. The Panthers added five more runs to extend their lead to 16-0.
Amanda Daniel (pictured), got her seventh win of the season, pitching three scoreless innings and had five strikeouts.
Williams led the Panthers in the nightcap, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored. Woodard and Flowers each went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
The Panthers will be back at home as they host Piedmont on Thursday in a GSAC doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
