Panthers sweep Millsaps to even record March 3, 2007
JACKSON, Miss. The LaGrange College softball team evened its season record with a sweep of Millsaps College on Saturday. The Panthers (3-3) won the first game 7-3 and completed the sweep with a 6-2 second game win. All three wins for the Panthers this season have come against Millsaps (0-9).
The top of the batting order had nine of the Panthers' 12 hits in the first game. Kim Woodard, pictured, Chloe Turnipseed and Kristi Underwood had three hits each. Underwood was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Turnipseed was also 3-for-3 including a double, scored three runs and stole two bases. Woodard had a double, scored two runs and had a stolen base.
The Panthers got a complete game from sophomore Amanda Daniel (1-1). Daniel struck out a career-high 13 batters, while allowing seven hits and walking one. All three runs she allowed were earned.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off starter and loser Kasey Thibod. Woodard led off the inning with a double to center field. She moved over to third on Turnipseed's sacrifice bunt and scored on Underwood's base hit.
With the scored tied 1-1, the Panthers took the lead for good in the third inning. Holly Hazelwood reached on an error to start the inning. One out later, Turnipseed singled through the right side. Underwood followed with a double scoring Hazelwood and Turnipseed for a 3-1 lead. Dicie Holland drove in Underwood with a base hit to up the Panthers' lead to 4-1.
The Panthers added to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Woodard started the inning with a base hit and stole second. Turnipseed and Underwood followed with back-to-back doubles to push the Panthers' lead to 6-1.
Turnipseed scored the Panthers' final run in the seventh inning. She led off the inning with a single. Turnipseed stole second, moved up to third on Underwood's sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.
In the second game, the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Panthers loaded the bases with no outs. Hazelwood led off the inning with an infield single. Amanda Jones was hit by a pitch and Kayla Yeargin reached on a bunt single. Leah Flowers reached on an error to score Hazelwood. Pinch runner Kelly Lewis scored as Woodard reached on a fielder's choice. Turnipseed reached on an error, scoring pinch runner Meagan Hammond. Holland drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly. 
The Panthers built a 6-0 lead with a run in the third inning and another in the sixth. Hazelwood led off the third with a double. She later scored on Yeargin's ground out. Woodard closed out the scoring for the Panthers in the sixth with her first home run of the season.
Millsaps avoided the shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lady Majors got two unearned runs off Megan Henry, pictured, for the 6-2 final. Henry (2-1) pitched a completed game, scattering eight hits and walked three.
The Panthers play six GSAC games this week, all on the road. The Panthers play Agnes Scott on Tuesday, Wesleyan on Thursday and Huntingdon on Friday. All three are doubleheaders. The Panthers host Millsaps on Sunday in their home opener.
