Panthers drop two to Maryville

The softball team dropped both games Saturday to GSAC-leader Maryville College, 3-0 and 6-1 at Panther Field. The Lady Scots improved to 11-5 and remain undefeated in GSAC play (4-0). The Panthers drop to 16-8 overall and 9-3 in the GSAC.
The Panthers hung tough against the Lady Scots in a game with two home runs by Mar yville, with one in the first and another in the third inning to make the score 2-0. The third run came in the fifth inning, as Maryville changed its strategy and played small ball, with a single and two bunts to advance the runner to third before scoring on a sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.
The Panthers managed only four hits and left four runners on base as they could not punch in a run in the first game. Megan Henry (pictured), (7-3) took the loss, but had a season-high four strikeouts and walked one.
In the second game, Maryville stayed hot, scoring six runs, to complete their first sweep against the Panthers since 2004.
The game was tied 1-1 until the Lady Scots broke out with a three-run fifth inning to give them the lead for good.
The Panthers threatened in the sixth inning with the score 5-1. Kristi Underwood started the inning with a single to left field but was thrown out at second. Valeree Williams connected on a double to left center on the next pitch. After Kellee Scandrett flied out to centerfield, Dicie Holland drew a walk. Amanda Jones loaded the bases on a single to right with Jennifer Knight coming to the plate.
Knight crushed a ball to left centerfield only to have Maryville's leftfielder make an outstanding catch to end the inning. The Lady Scots closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh.
Amanda Daniel (8-4) pitched five innings, striking out four and allowing two earned runs. Kim Woodard (pictured) went 2-for-3 scoring the only run of the day for the Panthers. Scandrett was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
The Panthers host Emory University on Sunday in non-conference action. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
