Panthers sweep Wesleyan for second time

MACON, Ga. – LaGrange swept Wesleyan on Thursday at Matthews Athletic Center. The Panthers (19-15) won the first game 3-0 and completed the sweep with a 6-0 win in the second game.

Amanda Daniel, Megan Henry and Danielle LaDuron combined to hold the Pioneers (4-25) to just 10 hits in the two games. Daniel (12-11) pitched a complete game four-hitter, striking out eight and not walking a batter. Henry went four innings in the second game, allowing four hits, walking only one and striking out six. LaDuron completed the second shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out two to earn her first save of the season.

The Panthers had 21 hits in the doubleheader. Holly Hazelwood went 5-for-8 in the two games. Katie Hein, Erica Robinson and Kayla Yeargin all had three hits. Robinson had a triple included in her hits and drove in three runs.

The Panthers did all of their scoring in the first inning of the first game. Hazelwood reached on an infield single with one out. Valeree Williams reached on an error and a single by Jennifer Knight loaded the bases. Kristi Underwood was hit by a pitch to force in Hazelwood with the first run. Leah Flowers' base hit scored Williams and Knight scored as Robinson reached on fielder's choice to put the Panthers up 3-0.

Daniel made the early led stand up. Belle Thomas doubled to left field in the first but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple. The Pioneers got a runner as far as second only one more time in the game. After Thomas' hit, Daniel had a stretch of retiring 15 of the next 16 batters.

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Hazelwood and Williams had back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out. Hazelwood scored on a wild pitch and Williams came home as Knight grounded out.

The Panthers padded their lead in the fourth inning. Underwood reached on an error and went to third on Allison Gordon's base hit to left. Robinson drove in both runners with a triple down the right field line. Kayla Yeargin laid down a bunt single, scoring Robinson to make it 5-0.

The Panthers closed out their scoring in the seventh inning. The Panthers loaded the bases with two outs. Underwood came home on a wild pitch to up the Panthers' lead to 6-0.

The Panthers close out the regular season with home doubleheaders against Centre on Saturday and Emory on Sunday.
