Panthers sweep Maryville to finish GSAC schedule April 12, 2008
MARYVILLE, Tenn. LaGrange completed its GSAC schedule with a sweep of Maryville on Saturday. The Panthers took the first game 2-0 and finished the sweep with an 8-7 win in eight innings in the second game. The Panthers improved to 9-3 in conference play and 17-13 overall. The host Lady Scots fell to 9-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Amanda Daniel (10-10) blanked Maryville on four hits in the first game. Daniel did not walk a batter and struck out five in the game.
Valeree Williams drove in both runs for the Panthers. Williams was 2-for-3 in the game, the only Panther with more than one hit.
The Panthers got their first run in the top of the first inning. Katie Hein led off the game with a double to right center. One out later, Williams' single to left field drove in Hein for a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Panthers took advantage of a pair of errors by Maryville to go up 2-0. Both errors occurred as Hein led off the inning. Hein ended up on second after the errors. She moved over to third on Holly Hazelwood's bunt single and scored as Williams reached on an infield single.
Daniel worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Amanda Bennett reached on a single and moved over to third on Katie Beckham's double. Daniel ended the game by striking out Hope Marlowe and getting pinch-hitter Jessica McCarter to ground out to end the game.
The Panthers overcame six errors and came from behind twice to win the second game. The Panthers finished the game with 14 hits. Hein was a perfect 4-for-4 and scored three runs to lead the Panthers.
Hein led off the game with a single in the first inning and scored on Jennifer Knight's base hit. She led off the third with another single and later scored on Williams' single for a 2-1 lead.
Maryville came back with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth to go up 3-2. The Panthers tied the game in the sixth as Leah Flowers reached on an error to begin the inning. She later stole home as part of a double steal to tie the game at 3-3.
The Lady Scots came back in their half of the sixth with two runs for a 5-3 lead. The Panthers answered with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Erica Robinson tied the game with a two-run double and Flowers capped the inning with a two-run single for a 7-5 lead. Maryville forced extra innings with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning off Daniel, who was in her first inning of relief.
In the eighth inning, the Panthers pushed across the winning run. Emily Foster moved over to third on Hein's sacrifice bunt and scored on Hazelwood's infield single. Maryville got the tying run to third with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Daniel got the final two outs to end the game.
The Panthers travel to Emory on Wednesday and to Wesleyan on Thursday. They host Centre on Saturday and close out the regular season Sunday at home against Emory.
