DeMooney, Daniel, Claybrook garner GSAC top awards

LaGrange College took three of the top individual awards handed out by the Great South Athletic Conference for the 2006 season. Senior shortstop Jessica DeMooney was named the Player of the Year, pitcher Amanda Daniel the Freshman of the Year and head coach Jennifer Claybrook the Coach of the Year.

The Panthers had seven All-Conference selections. They also had three named to the All-Freshman team and five earn Academic All-Conference honors.

DeMooney earned her third straight Player of the Year award. She leads or is tied for the team lead in 11 different offensive categories. She has a team-high .479 batting average and 55 runs scored. DeMooney ranks nationally in the NCAA Division III statistics in both categories. She has a home run and 31 RBIs. In conference play, DeMooney batted .522 with 13 RBIs.

Daniel had a 14-7 record on the mound. She tied for the team lead in wins and led the team with an ERA of 0.82. In conference play, Daniel was 5-1 with a 0.91 ERA. She struck out 117 batters in 136-2/3 innings.

Claybrook guided the Panthers to a school-record 32 wins since the fast pitch program was started. She picked up her 100th career win this season and has a career record of 104-69 in four years as the Panthers' head coach.

Joining DeMooney and Daniels on the all-conference team were: sophomoe pitcher Megan Henry (14-4, 1.05 ERA), junior catcher Dicie Holland (.291, 2 HR, 22 RBIs), junior third baseman Kim Woodard (.424, 1 HR, 45 RBIs), senior outfielder Stephanie Bassett (.338, 1 HR, 28 RBIs) and junior outfielder Kellee Scandrett (.377, 1 HR, 37 RBIs).

Chloe Turnipseed (.336, 0 HR, 20 RBIs) and Kristi Underwood (.331, 0 HR, 23 RBIs) were selected for the all-freshman team along with Daniels. Bassett, Holland, Adrianne Brown, Hayley Hanson and Dawn Smith earned academic all-conference honors.

Piedmont ends Panthers' GSAC run

MACON, Ga.- Piedmont College got three unearned runs in the second inning and made them hold up for a 3-1 win over LaGrange College at the GSAC Championship Tournament on Monday. The loss eliminated the Panthers (32-11) from the tournament.

Amanda Daniel (14-7) pitched a complete game for the Panthers. She allowed the three unearned runs, five hits, walked three and struck out four.

The Lady Lions started the second inning with Marissa Harding reaching on an error. Piedmont loaded the bases with one out. Lindsay Drevlow drove in the first run of the inning with a single. One out later, Leah Drevlow singled to center to score two more runs and put the Lady Lions up 3-0.

The Panthers got a run back in the third inning. Chloe Turnipseed had an infield single with one out. Jessica DeMooney reached on an error and Kim Woodard's base hit loaded the bases. Kellee Scandrett followed with a single to score Turnipseed to make it 3-1.

The Panthers did not threaten again until the seventh inning. With two outs and no one on, Turnipseed singled through the right side. DeMooney dropped a hit down the left field line but Turnipseed was thrown out trying to reach third on the play to end the game.

Panthers stay alive at GSAC tournament
April 23 2006

MACON, Ga.- LaGrange College (32-10) stayed alive in the GSAC Championship Tournament on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Maryville. The Panthers will play top-seeded Piedmont in the loser's bracket final Monday at 11 a.m. The winner must beat Huntingdon twice to claim the tournament title.

Amanda Daniel (14-6) outdueled Maryville's Angie Castle. Daniel allowed only four hits, an unearned run, two walks and seven strikeouts. Castle held the Panthers to five hits, only one earned run and struck out two.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Stephanie Bassett reached on a one-out infield hit and moved up to second on a ground out. Dicie Holland doubled down the right field line to drive in Bassett for a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers got an insurance run in the fifth inning. Jessica DeMooney singled to right with one out and ended up at third when the ball was misplayed. She scored on Chloe Turnipseed's ground out to up the Panthers' lead to 2-0.

Maryville pushed across its run in the sixth inning. Brittany Hayes singled with one out. She moved over to third on a stolen base and a passed ball. Kerri Onks drove in Hayes with a two-out single to cut the Panthers' lead to 2-1.

Daniel retired the Lady Scots in order in the ninth to seal the win. Turnipseed robbed Amanda Rader of a base hit with a leaping catch to end the game.

Panthers eliminate Spelman at GSAC tournament
April 23 2006

MACON, Ga.- LaGrange College (31-10) eliminated Spelman (3-18) from the GSAC Championship Tournament with a 9-2 win Sunday.  The Panthers will play the Maryville-Agnes Scott winner in another elimination game beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Kellee Scandrett drove in three runs with two hits, including a triple. Chloe Turnipseed also had two hits and two RBIs. The Panthers took advantage of eight Jaguar errors leading to seven unearned runs.

Megan Henry (14-4) went five innings to pick up the win. Henry allowed two unearned runs, only two hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Huntingdon edges Panthers at GSAC tournament
April 23 2006

MACON, Ga.- Huntingdon pushed across the winning run in the eighth inning to beat LaGrange College 3-2 at the GSAC Championship Tournament hosted by Wesleyan College. The loss was the first for the Panthers (30-10) in the double elimination tournament. It was also the first loss of the season to Huntingdon after four wins this season.

The Panthers play Spelman at 1 p.m. in an elimination game. Huntingdon (19-16) will play the Piedmont-Maryville winner at 5 p.m.

Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Panther starter and loser Amanda Daniel (13-6). Nicole Hill led off with a single. She moved over to third on a passed ball and scored on Rachel Moya's sacrifice fly.

The Panthers tied the game with the help of two Hawk errors in the fifth inning. Jessica DeMooney moved over to third on an errant pick off attempt and a ground out. She scored when Kellee Scandrett scored on an error by Hawk shortstop Kasey Andrews.

Huntingdon retook the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Amanda Helton led off with a single up the middle. She moved over to third on an infield hit and a wild pitch. Nicole Marshall drove in Helton with a sacrifice fly to put the Hawks up 2-1.

The Panthers answered in their half of the seventh. Kim Woodard reached on a fielder's choice and Kellee Scandrett walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Woodard tied the game again when Stephanie Bassett grounded out to second.

Huntingdon came right back in the eighth inning to retake the lead. Alyssa Ryan moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Hill's base hit to left. The Panthers were unable to come back in their half of the eighth as the Hawks held on for the win.

Panthers win GSAC tournament opener
April 22, 2006

MACON, Ga.- LaGrange College needed only five innings to defeat Spelman 15-1 on Saturday at the GSAC Championship Tournament hosted by Wesleyan College. The Panthers (30-9), seeded second, begin play Sunday at 9 a.m. against third-seeded Huntingdon. With the win, the Panthers reached the 30-win milestone in a season for the first time since the fast pitch program was started.

Megan Henry (13-4) held the Jaguars to two hits in pitching four scoreless innings. The Jaguars avoided the shutout with an unearned run off reliever Hayley Hanson in the fifth inning.

Kim Woodard and Jessica DeMooney backed Henry's pitching with perfect 3-for- 3 days at the plate. Woodard drove in four runs and scored two runs. DeMooney had two RBIs and scored three runs.  The Panthers had 15 hits in the game.

The Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Adrianne Brown had a two-run single in the inning. DeMooney added a two-run single of her own later in the inning. Woodard capped the inning with a two-run triple.

The Panthers tacked on six more runs in the second inning to go up 14-0. Mary Carden reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run and Meagen Spratling had an RBI single. Kristi Underwood and Stephanie Bassett each walked with the bases loaded to force in runs.

The double-elimination tournament runs through Monday.


Panthers head to GSAC Tournament

LaGrange College will play in the GSAC Softball Championship Tournament beginning Saturday, April 22. The tournament will be held at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. and will conclude on Monday, April 24.

The Panthers (29-9, 12-2 GSAC) are the second-seeded team in the eight-team double-elimination tournament. The Panthers play at 1 p.m. against seventh-seeded Spelman.

Piedmont is the defending champion and top seed in the tournament. The Lady Lions handed the Panthers their only conference losses this season.

The Panthers are looking for their first conference tournament title since 2001. Piedmont is trying to become the second team to repeat as tournament champion. Huntingdon won the title in 2003-04.


Emory spoils Senior Night

Emory spoiled LaGrange College's Senior Night by sweeping the Panthers in a doubleheader Tuesday. The Eagles (32-6) won the first game 2-1 in eight innings and completed the sweep with a 9-2 win in the second game. The Panthers (29-9) honored Stephanie Bassett, Mary Carden and Jessica DeMooney between games.

In the first game, the Panthers' Amanda Daniel (13-5) and Emory's Kathy Gordon hooked up in a pitcher's duel that lasted eight innings. Daniel allowed two unearned runs and scattered five hits, while striking seven. Gordon surrendered six hits, the one run and struck out 12.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. With one out, DeMooney singled up the middle. Kim Woodard walked and Kellee Scandrett followed with a base hit to left. DeMooney scored on the play when the ball was bobbled in the outfield, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Emory tied the game up in the fifth inning. Alyson Moler's two-out single scored Cassi Witcher with the tying run. The game remained tied until the eighth inning.

The Eagles pushed across the winning run in the first extra inning. Witcher scored the deciding run when Moler reached on an error. In the bottom of the inning, Gordon retired the Panthers in order to seal the win.

Emory took a 2-0 lead against Panther starter Megan Henry (12-4) in the second game in the third inning. The Eagles were helped by a Panther error in the inning. The Panthers got a run back in their half of the third.

Chloe Turnipseed was hit by a pitch with one out. She moved up to second on a base hit by DeMooney. Turnipseed came around to score when the Eagles botched a pick off attempt of DeMooney at first base.

But in the fourth inning, the Eagles erupted for seven runs to take control of the game. Hayley Hanson relieved Henry with no outs in the inning. The Eagles built a 7-1 lead before Daniel relieved Hanson. Daniel was greeted with a two-run double by Betsy Bruinsma giving the Eagles a 9-1 lead.

The Panthers closed out the scoring in the fourth inning. Kellee Scandrett doubled to left center with one out. She moved over to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball to make it 9-2.

 The Panthers play in the GSAC Championship Tournament beginning Saturday. The Panthers, seeded second, play Spelman in their first game of the double elimination tournament.

Claybrook gets 100th coaching win

MACON, Ga. - LaGrange College softball coach Jennifer Claybrook reached a coaching milestone as the Panthers swept Wesleyan 11-0 and 12-2 on Thursday. Claybrook got her 100th win as the Panthers' head coach in the first game.

The Panthers (29-7) are having their best season under Claybrook, now in her fourth year as head coach. The two wins against the Pioneers (4-25) pushed the Panthers' win streak to 10 games, equaling their season high.  Both games ended after the fifth inning because of the run-rule.

Amanda Daniel (13-4) threw a one-hitter in the first game. Daniel struck out six and did not walk a batter in four innings. Hayley Hanson retired the Pioneers in order in the fifth inning to end the game.

Kim Woodard led the Panthers' 13-hit attack with three hits. Kellee Scandrett and Stephanie Bassett had two RBIs each.

The Panthers broke the game open in the third inning. Leading 1-0, the Panthers sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs in the inning.

Woodard started the inning with a base hit. Scandrett followed with a triple to score Woodard. Bassett followed with the first of two run-scoring singles she had in the inning. Woodard, Meagen Spratling, Chloe Turnipseed all had RBI singles in the inning. Scandrett drove in her second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. The Pioneers helped the Panthers with three errors in the game.

In the second game, Scandrett, Jessica DeMooney and Kristi Underwood combined for 10 hits, eight runs and seven RBIs. The Panthers had 17 hits in the game.

Hanson (4-0) pitched the first four innings to get the win. She allowed two runs, while scattering five hits and striking out two. Megan Henry pitched a scoreless fifth inning to end the game.

The Panthers got three runs in the first inning. DeMooney led off with a base hit and came around to score on Scandrett's one-out triple. Scandrett scored as Stephanie Bassett reached on an error. Bassett would later score on a base hit by Underwood.
 
The Pioneers got both of their runs in the bottom of the first to cut the Panthers' lead to 3-2. The Panthers added a run in the third to go up 4-2.

The Panthers broke the game open in the fourth. Underwood and Adrianne Brown had RBI singles in the inning. An error on Spratling's ball hit to third baseman Jodie Rozma led to three unearned runs as the Panthers took a 9-2 lead.

The Panthers closed out the scoring with three more runs in the fifth. Scandrett had a run-scoring single and Jennifer Beaver capped the inning with a two-run single.

The Panthers close out the regular season against Emory on Tuesday. It wil be Senior Night for the Panthers.

Panthers continue winning ways

LaGrange College continued its winning ways by sweeping Judson College on Wednesday. The Panthers took the first game 9-1 and completed the sweep with a 9-0 win in the second game. The wins upped the Panthers' winning streak to eight games and their season record to 27-7.

The Panthers got two hits each from four different players in the first game, finishing with 10 as a team. Jessica DeMooney, Kellee Scandrett, Adrianne Brown and Meagen Spratling had two hits each. Brown, Spratling and Kim Woodard had two RBIs each.

Amanda Daniel (12-4) went the distance for the Panthers in the first game. She scattered six hits over five innings.

The Panthers spotted Judson a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shana Kelly led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Anna Billingham's double.

The Panthers answered with three runs in their half of the first. DeMooney started the inning with a triple and scored on Woodard's ground out. Brown capped the inning with a two-run single for a 3-1 lead.

The Panthers added to their lead in the second inning. With two outs, Woodard walked and Scandrett followed with a triple to make it 4-1. In the third, Spratling drove in a run with a single and Brown scored on Chloe Turnipseed's ground out to pad the lead to 6-1.

The Panthers ended the game in the fifth with three runs for the 9-1 final score. Spratling and Woodard had RBI singles in the inning. DeMooney scored the deciding run on an error to end the game.

In the second game, Megan Henry and Hayley Hanson combined on a four-hit shutout. Henry (12-3) went four innings to get the win. She allowed three hits and struck out five. Hanson pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to preserve the shutout.

Kristi Underwood's two-out single in the first drove in two runs for a 2-0 lead. The Panthers added four runs in the second to go up 6-0. DeMooney had a two-run triple in the inning and Woodard added a run-scoring double.

The Panthers finished their scoring in the third inning. Scandrett accounted for all three runs in the inning with her first home run of the season.

The Panthers travel to Wesleyan in Macon on Thursday and close out the regular season on Tuesday, April 18 at home against Emory. It will be Senior Night for the Panthers.

Panthers run winning streak to six

LaGrange College ran its winning streak to six games with a sweep of Agnes Scott at Panther Field on Monday. The Panthers did not allow a run and only one hit in winning 7-0 and 14-0.The Panthers improved to 25-7, while the Scotties slipped to 11-19.

The Panthers' pitching staff dominated the Scotties. Megan Henry (11-3) and Hayley Hanson combined for a five-inning perfect game to complete the sweep. Henry retired the first 12 batters and Hanson finished the no-hitter by retiring the side in order in the fifth. It was the third no-hitter Henry has been involved in this season and the second she has combined with Hanson on. The Scotties got only one ball to the outfield.

In the first game, Amanda Daniel (11-4) pitched her team-leading 12th complete game. She allowed only a lead-off hit in the first inning, while striking out 10 and not walking a batter.

The Panthers gave Daniel all the runs she needed in the first inning. Kellee Scandrett drove in Jessica DeMooney with a single for the game's first run. Scandrett later scored on Dicie Holland's two-out double for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, the Panthers padded their lead with three runs to make it 5-0. DeMooney capped the inning with a two-run home run, her first of the season.

The Panthers added single runs in the third and fourth to close out the scoring. Kristi Underwood scored on Chloe Turnipseed's ground out in the third. In the fourth, Underwood drove in Holland with a two-out RBI double.

The Panthers had nine hits in the first game. Scandrett and Underwood led the way with two hits each.

In the second game, the Panthers got a run in the first inning and four more in the second to build a 5-0 lead. DeMooney had a run-scoring triple in the second inning and scored on an error on the play. Holland and Stephanie Bassett had RBI singles in the inning.

The Panthers sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring nine runs to open up a 14-0 lead. Turnipseed and Adrianne Brown each had two-run doubles in the inning. DeMooney drove in three runs with a pair of singles in the inning.

The Panthers had 16 hits in the game. DeMooney finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Turnipseed was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Scandrett and Kim Woodard had two hits each.

The Panthers host Judson on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

Emory sweeps doubleheader from Panthers

ATLANTA – Emory University swept a doubleheader Saturday from LaGrange College. The Eagles downed the Panthers 4-1 in the first game and completed the sweep with a 3-0 in the second game. The Panthers, losers of four straight, dropped to 19-7. Emory, ranked 22nd, upped its record to 23-5.

Amanda Daniel (8-4) took the loss in the first game. She pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs, walking one and striking out one. Megan Henry (8-3) pitched into the sixth inning of the second game. She allowed five hits and two earned runs. Hayley Hanson got the final out of the sixth inning.

The Panthers got their only run of the day in the seventh inning of the first game. Kristi Underwood reached on a one-out infield single. She moved over to third on Adrianne Brown's double. Mary Carden walked to load the bases. Underwood scored on Chloe Turnipseed's ground out for the 4-1 final score.

The Panthers were limited to seven hits in the two games. Stephanie Bassett had two hits in the first game. Brown was 2-for-2, including the double, in the second game.

 The Panthers go on the road against Maryville in a GSAC doubleheader Monday.

Piedmont hands Panthers first GSAC losses
March 30, 2006

DEMOREST, Ga.- Piedmont College rode the pitching of Meredith Ray to a sweep of LaGrange College in a GSAC doubleheader Thursday. Ray threw a one-hitter in a 4-0 win in the first game and completed the sweep with a 3-2 win in the second game.

The two teams had come into the doubleheader with identical 10-0 conference marks. Piedmont improved to 17-5 overall, while the Panthers dropped to 19-5 overall.

In the first game, Stephanie Bassett got the only hit for the Panthers with a one out single in the seventh. Ray (11-1) did not allow a runner to reach second base in the game. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Amanda Daniel (8-3) took the loss for the Panthers. She allowed all four runs and 10 hits in 3-2/3 innings of work. Hayley Hanson pitched 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Jessica DeMooney led off the game with a single. She moved up on a ground out and a passed ball. DeMooney scored on Kellee Scandrett's sacrifice fly.

Megan Henry (8-2) started and took the second game loss. She pitched four innings, allowing three runs, only two were earned while scattering six hits. Hanson pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game.

The Panthers trailed 3-1 heading into the seventh. Kristi Underwood and Adrianne Brown led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Amanda Jones' sacrifice bunt moved both runners up. Underwood scored on Mary Carden's to cut the Lady Lions' lead to 3-2. But Ray was able to retire the final batter to preserve the win.

The Panthers travel to Atlanta for a non-conference doubleheader with Emory on Saturday.

Panthers sweep Huntingdon to stay perfect in GSAC play
March 28, 2006

LaGrange College ran its winning streak to six and stayed perfect in the GSAC with an 8-0 and 7-0 sweep of Huntingdon on Tuesday. The Panthers improved to 19-3 overall and 10-0 in conference play. Huntingdon had its 10-game winning streak snapped and fell to 13-14 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

During the current winning streak, the Panthers have posted six straight shutouts, outscoring their opponents 105-0. Five of the games have ended because of the 8-run mercy rule. The Panthers' team ERA now stands at 0.68. All three pitchers have ERAs under 1.00.

Amanda Daniel pitched a complete-game two-hitter in the first game to up her record to 8-2. The Lady Hawks got only one runner as far as third base. Daniel did not walk a batter and struck out two.

In the second game, Megan Henry (8-1) and Hayley Hanson combined to finish the sweep. Henry pitched the first four innings, allowing four hits and walking a batter. Hanson retired the Lady Hawks in order the last three innings to close out the win.

The pitching was backed by a hitting attack that pounded out 22 hits. Kim Woodard was 6-for-8 in the two games with two runs scored and three RBIs. Jessica DeMooney was 5-for-7 with five runs scored and an RBI.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game. They loaded the bases with no outs. Dicie Holland's sacrifice fly scored DeMooney, who had walked to lead off the inning.

In the third, the Panthers opened the inning with three straight hits. A lead-off double by DeMooney, followed by Woodard's run-scoring double put the Panthers up 2-0. A single by Kellee Scandrett was followed by a one-out two-run double from Holland padded the Panthers' lead to 4-0.

Stephanie Bassett's two-out single scored DeMooney in the fourth to increase the Panthers' lead to 5-0. In the sixth, the Panthers closed out the game with three runs. Bassett drove in the first run with a single. Holland walked with the bases loaded to force in a run to make it 7-0. Scandrett ended the game by scoring on a wild pitch for the 8-0 final score.

In the second game, the Panthers took advantage of Lady Hawk miscues to take an early 2-0 lead. Huntingdon made two errors in the second inning as the Panthers took a 2-0 lead. DeMooney and Woodard brought in the runs with back-to-back two-out base hits.

The Panthers came back in the third with two more runs to go up 4-0. Mary Carden had the big hit, a two-out two-run double scoring Amanda Jones and Adrianne Brown. In the fourth, the Panthers scored without benefit of a hit, as the Lady Hawks committed two more errors allowing a run and a 5-0 Panther lead.

The Panthers closed out the scoring in the fifth. Once again they did the scoring with two outs. Woodard and Scandrett had run-scoring base hits that drove in Dawn Smith and DeMooney for the 7-0 final score.

The Panthers travel to Piedmont for a GSAC first place showdown Thursday. The Lady Lions are 15-3 overall and 10-0 in conference play.

Panthers blast Fisk in GSAC doubleheader
March 25, 2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- LaGrange College rolled past Fisk University in a GSAC doubleheader Saturday. The Panthers (17-3, 8-0 GSAC) won the first game 36-0 and the second game 29-0. Both games ended on the 8-run mercy rule. The Panthers have won four straight games, outscoring their opponents 90-0.

Kim Woodard and Adrianne Brown hit grand slam home runs in the first game. Brown finished with five RBIs in the game. Woodard, Mary Carden and Chloe Turnipseed had four RBIs each.

The Panthers had 22 hits in the game. Jessica DeMooney and Kristi Underwood had four hits each. Stephanie Bassett scored five runs, while four others scored four runs.

Megan Henry (6-1) pitched a five-inning no-hitter. She faced the minimum 15 batters, while walking one and striking out a career-high 12.

In the second game, Dicie Holland had five hits, including a home run and drove in seven runs. Bassett had five hits also, including four doubles and drove in six runs.

The Panthers finished with a season-high 28 hits in the second game. Every Panther in the lineup had at least one hit.

Hayley Hanson (3-0) scattered four hits in the getting the second game win. She walked only one and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.

The Panthers host Huntingdon in a GSAC doubleheader Tuesday, beginning at 5 p.m.

Panthers stay perfect in GSAC with sweep of Spelman
March 23, 2006

LaGrange College stayed perfect in GSAC play with a sweep of visiting Spelman on Thursday night. The Panthers took the first game 8-0 and completed the sweep with a 17-0 win in the second game. Both games ended after five innings because of the 8-run mercy rule. The Panthers improved to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

Amanda Daniel (7-2) and Hayley Hanson (2-0) each threw one-hitters for the Panthers. Daniel walked only one and struck out three in the first game. Hanson did not walk a batter and struck out six in the second game.

After a scoreless first two innings in the first game, the Panthers broke out in the third inning. The Panthers reeled off five straight hits to start the inning. Jessica DeMooney led off with a double. She was followed by base hits from Kim Woodard, Kellee Scandrett, Stephanie Bassett and Dicie Holland. DeMooney scored the first run on a passed ball. Scandrett's hit scored Woodard, while Holland's hit scored Scandrett and Bassett to make it 4-0. Chloe Turnipseed's infield hit scored Holland to up the Panthers lead to 5-0.

The Panthers added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close out the game. Holland had an RBI single in the fourth to score Woodard. DeMooney ended the game with a two-run double, scoring Turnipseed and Hanson for the 8-0 final score.

Woodard went 3-for-3 to lead the Panthers' 10-hit attack. DeMooney and Holland had two hits each and combined for five RBIs.

The Panthers gave Hanson all the runs she needed in the second game with a 10-run second inning. The Panthers had only three hits in the inning, taking advantage of seven walks and a hit batter. The Panthers added three runs in the third and four more in the fourth for the 17-0 final score.

The Panthers had only eight hits in the game. Dawn Smith was the only Panther with two hits. She had three RBIs and three runs scored. Turnipseed drove in three runs with a walk, a ground out and a sacrifice fly.

The Panthers play Fisk in a GSAC doubleheader Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. The Panthers host Huntingdon on March 28.

Panthers split final two games at Early Bird Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C.- LaGrange split its final two games of the Early Bird Tournament at the Freedom Facility on Saturday. The Panthers, playing in the gold bracket, defeated Averett 12-1 before losing to tournament host Methodist 3-1 in nine innings. The Panthers (13-3) finished 3-2 in the two-day tournament.

The Panthers needed only six innings to defeat the Cougars. The Panthers pounded out 16 hits and got five shutout innings from Megan Henry (6-1). Henry allowed four hits, while walking only one and striking out four.

The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Stephanie Bassett had a run-scoring double and Amanda Jones an RBI single in the inning. The Cougars helped the Panthers with a pair of errors in the inning.

The Panthers added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to increase their lead to 5-0. Kristi Underwood had an RBI single in the fourth. Kim Woodard's double drove in the run in the fifth.

The Panthers exploded for seven runs in the sixth to put the game away. Woodard had the big hit in the inning, a bases loaded double that drove in three runs. Bassett and Jessica DeMooney had run-scoring singles in the inning.

The Cougars avoided the shutout by getting an unearned run off reliever Haley Hanson in the bottom of the sixth. The game was called on the 8-run mercy rule.

Woodard led the Panthers with three hits, three runs scored and four RBIs. The Panthers had five players with two hits each.

Methodist 3, LaGrange 1 (9 Innings)
The Panthers finished the tournament with a loss to tournament host Methodist. The two teams battled for seven scoreless innings, before the Monarchs pushed across the winning runs in the ninth.

The Panthers' Amanda Daniel (6-2) and the Monarchs' Lesley Hewitt hooked up in a pitcher's duel. Daniel allowed only two hits in the first seven innings. Hewitt surrendered four hits and pitched around three Monarch errors to keep the Panthers off the board.

Methodist broke the scoreless tie in the first extra inning using the international tie-breaker rule. Rebecca Taylor drove in Taylor Powers to put the Monarchs up 1-0.

The Panthers answered in their half of the eighth. Kellee Scandrett's one-out single scored Chloe Turnipseed to tie the game again.

In the ninth, the Monarchs loaded the bases off Daniel with two outs. Lisa Jackson delivered a two-run double to drive in the go-ahead runs. Jennifer Sorensen retired the Panthers in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.

The Panthers host Spelman on Thursday, March 23 in a GSAC doubleheader.

Panthers go 2-1 on first day of Early Bird Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C.- LaGrange College bounced back from an opening loss to win two straight at the Early Bird Tournament at the Freedom Facility on Friday. The Panthers finished the day second in pool play and will play in the gold bracket of the tournament Saturday. They play Averett at 10:45 a.m. and tournament host Methodist at 2:15 p.m.

Peace, who went 3-0 in pool play, edged the Panthers 3-2 in the day's first game. The Panthers came back to beat N.C. Wesleyan 4-3 and Staten Island 3-1. The Panthers are 12-2 overall for the season.

Peace 3, LaGrange 2
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kim Woodard walked with one out and stole second. She came around to score the game's first run on Kellee Scandrett's double.

The Pacers (12-6) tied the game in the third inning. Melanie Legrow led off the inning with a home run off Panther starter Amanda Daniel (5-1), tying the game at 1-1.

Peace took the lead in the sixth. The Pacers pushed across two runs for a 3-1 lead. Lauren Pleasant, the Pacers' pitcher, had the big hit in the inning, a bases loaded two-run single.

The Panthers came back in the last of the seventh inning. Kristi Underwood led off the inning with an infield hit. She scored on Jessica DeMooney's two-out base hit to cut the Pacers' lead to 3-2. But Pleasant got the last out of the inning to preserve the win for Peace.

Daniel went the distance for the Panthers in taking the loss. She struck out 11 and walked only one. DeMooney had two of the Panthers' seven hits.

LaGrange 4, N.C. Wesleyan 3
The Panthers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and held on to beat the Bishops (8-6). Megan Henry (5-1) pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run. DeMooney backed Henry's pitching with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate and scored two runs.

The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. DeMooney got the Panthers started with a lead off double. Kim Woodard walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. DeMooney scored on Stephanie Bassett's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Kristi Underwood and Mary Carden each had two-out base hits to up the Panthers' lead to 3-0.

The Bishops got a run back in the second inning to cut the Panthers' lead to 3-1. The Panthers got an unearned run in their half of the second to go up 4-1.

The scored stayed there until the seventh. The Bishops pushed across two unearned runs in the inning to cut the Panthers' lead to 4-3. But Henry got the final out, stranding runners at second and third.

LaGrange 3, Staten Island 1
Amanda Daniel (6-1) bounced back from the loss to Peace to pitch the Panthers into the gold bracket. Daniel scattered six hits, the only run was unearned and struck out eight.

The Panthers did all of their scoring in the third inning. DeMooney and Woodard had back-to-back singles with one out. Stephanie Bassett reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with two outs. DeMooney scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Underwood followed with a two-run double to put the Panthers up 3-0.

Trailing 3-1, the Dolphins (0-5) made things interesting in the seventh. They loaded the bases with two outs. But Daniel struck out Megan Gardella for the final out of the game.

Underwood and Amanda Jones had two hits each for the Panthers.

Panthers' win streak ends at 10

Visiting Emory & Henry handed LaGrange College its first loss of the season Monday night. The Wasps won the second game of a doubleheader 7-3, ending the Panthers' 10-game winning streak. The Panthers had won the first game 6-5.

In the first game, the Panthers came from behind, then survived a last-inning rally by the Wasps. The Panthers trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kim Woodard got the Panthers going in the fifth with a one-out double. Kellee Scandrett, Adrianne Brown and Stephanie Bassett drew consecutive walks. Bassett's walk brought in Woodard to tie the game. Scandrett scored as Dicie Holland reached on an error to put the Panthers up 3-2. Kristi Underwood added an RBI single and Bassett scored the final run of the inning on Amanda Daniel's ground out as the Panthers went up 5-2.

The Panthers added what turned out to be a big insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2. Bassett's two-out run-scoring single scored Scandrett, who had walked earlier in the inning.

In the seventh, the Wasps started the inning with three consecutive singles off reliever Megan Henry to load the bases. Henry had reileved Daniel (5-0), who started the game, in the fifth inning. The Wasps picked up two runs to cut the Panthers' lead to 6-4 with two outs. After a wild pitch scored another run to close the gap to 6-5, Daniel re-entered the game. She struck out Meagan Funk to end the game.

The Wasps jumped on Henry (4-1) for a 3-0 lead by the third inning of the second game. The Panthers cut the lead to 3-2 with runs in the third and fourth innings.

In the third, Jessica DeMooney doubled with two outs. She scored on Woodard's RBI single for the Panthers' first run. The Panthers scored with two outs in the fourth also. Underwood's base hit scored Holland, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.

The Wasps chased Henry in the fifth with a pair of runs to go up 5-2. The Panthers got a run back in their half of the fifth. Amanda Jones led off the inning with a single. She later scored on Scandrett's sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

The Wasps scored a pair of insurance runs without benefit of a hit in the seventh for the 7-3 final margin. Hayley Hanson, who relieved Henry, finished the game for the Panthers.

Panthers push winning streak to nine

MONTGOMERY- LaGrange College improved to 9-0 with a sweep of Millsaps at Lagoon Park here Saturday. The Panthers took the first game 3-2 and completed the sweep with a 4-0 win in the second game.

The Panthers got complete game pitching from Amanda Daniel and Megan Henry. Daniel did not allow an earned run, while striking out 11 and walking one. She scattered four hits. Henry allowed only three hits, struck out five and walked one in the second game.

Millsaps took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with the aid of a Panther error. The Panthers answered in their half of the first. Jessica DeMooney led off with a single. She moved over to third on a ground out and a base hit before scoring on a wild pitch.

The Panthers took their first lead of the game in the second. Adrianne Brown and Kristi Underwood led the inning with back-to-back hits. Brown scored on DeMooney's two-out base hit for a 2-1 lead.

The Majors took advantage of a Panther error to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth. The Panthers pushed across the eventual winning run in their half of the fifth.

Chloe Turnipseed led off the inning with a single and moved over to third on DeMooney's double. Turnipseed scored on Kim Woodard's short sacrifice fly to put the Panthers ahead to stay, 3-2.

DeMooney was a perfect 3-for-3 to lead the Panthers nine-hit attack. Brown  and Kellee Scandrett both had two hits.

In the second game, Henry was locked in a pitcher's duel with Millsaps' Erica Douglas for the first four innings. The Panthers broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the fifth.

Turnipseed started the inning with a base hit. She stole second and scored when Meagen Spratling's sacrifice bunt was misplayed. Scandrett drove in the second run with an RBI single. Stephanie Bassett capped the rally with a two-run single for a 4-0 lead.

Henry pitched around trouble in the sixth inning. The Majors put runners on at second and third with one out. She got out of the inning by getting a line drive hit back at her for an out and a ground out to preserve the 4-0 lead.

The Panthers had 10 hits in the second game. Brown and Turnipseed each had two hits.

 The Panthers host Emory & Henry in a doubleheader on Monday, March 13 beginning at 5 p.m.

Panthers stay perfect with sweep of Agnes Scott

LaGrange College stayed unbeaten on the 2006 season with a sweep of visiting Agnes Scott in a GSAC doubleheader. The Panthers took the first game 9-1. The second game was called in the third inning because Agnes Scott did not have enough players to continue the game after an injury. The Panthers led 14-5 at the time.

The Panthers and the Scotties were tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Meagen Spratling broke the tie with a two-run single with one out in the fourth. Jessica DeMooney drove in two more runs with a double to put the Panthers up 5-1. DeMooney scored on an error for the final run of the inning.

The Panthers ended the game on the 8-run mercy rule with three runs in the fifth. DeMooney had an RBI single in the inning. Kim Woodard ended the game with a run-scoring single.

Hayley Hanson pitched four innings to get her first win of the year. She allowed an unearned run, while striking out three and walking one. Megan Henry pitched a scoreless fifth inning, striking out two.

The Panthers exploded for 14 runs in the first inning of the second game. Woodard drove in four runs in the inning with a triple and a double. Mary Carden also drove in four runs with a double and a single. DeMooney and Stephanie Bassett each had two hits in the inning. The Panthers had 10 hits in the inning.

Agnes Scott scored five unearned runs in the top of the third inning off starter Amanda Daniel (3-0). Susan Simpson was injured in a play at the plate in the inning. The game was called after the third out of the inning, because the Scotties did not have a player to replace Simpson.

The Panthers face Millsaps in Montgomery, Ala. on Saturday. They return home against Emory & Henry on Monday, March 13.

Panthers sweep Wesleyan to open GSAC schedule
March 8, 2006

LaGrange College opened its 2006 GSAC schedule by sweeping visiting Wesleyan by identical 8-0 scores in the doubleheader. The Panthers improved to 5-0 on the season, while Wesleyan dropped to 2-5 overall.

The Panthers got outstanding pitching from Amanda Daniel (2-0) and Megan Henry (3-0). Daniel allowed only one hit in six innings in the first game. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Henry pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the second game. She allowed only two walks and struck out six. Wesleyan had a runner reach second only twice in the two games.

The Panthers pounded out 20 hits in the doubleheader. Kellee Scandrett had five hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs in the two games. Kim Woodard had two triples and a double included in her four hits. She drove in four runs in the first game. Stephanie Bassett also had four hits.

In the first game, the Panthers got a run in the first. Woodard led the inning with a single. She scored on Scandrett's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers increased their lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings. Woodard had a two-run double in the third inning. She had an RBI triple in the fifth and scored on a base hit by Scandrett.

The Panthers ended the game in the sixth on the 8-run mercy rule. Dicie Holland, who led off the inning with a double, scored on Chloe Turnipseed's ground out to make it 6-0. Jessica DeMooney scored on Woodard's ground out. The game ended when Adrianne Brown reached on an error, allowing Scandrett to score for the final 8-0 margin.

In the second game, the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Woodard opened the inning with a triple and scored on Scandrett's double. Bassett drove in Scandrett for the second run of the inning. Holland added an RBI single and scored the final run of the inning on a Pioneer error.

The Panthers closed out the scoring in the third inning with four more runs. Meagen Spratling led off with a double. She moved over to third on Turnipseed's sacrifice bunt and scored when the Pioneers made an error on the play. DeMooney scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Turnipseed scored on Bassett's base hit and Scandrett later scored on another error to make it 8-0.

The Panthers host GSAC foe Agnes Scott in a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.

Panthers sweep Sewanee
March 4, 2006

LaGrange College improved to 3-0 with a sweep of visiting Sewanee on Saturday. The Panthers run-ruled the visitors in both games, winning 8-0 and 10-2.

The Panthers banged out 23 hits in the two games. Kellee Scandrett went 4-for-4, including two doubles, in the first game. In the second game, Kim Woodard was also 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs.

The Panthers gave first game starter Amanda Daniel (1-0) all the runs she needed in the first inning. Woodard and Scandrett led off the inning with a single and a double. Woodard scored on a wild pitch. Scandrett scored on a passed ball. Stephanie Bassett later scored on a ground out to make it 3-0.

The Panthers increased their lead to 4-0 in the second on Bassett's RBI double. They added two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to close out the scoring. Chloe Turnipseed had a run-scoring double in the fourth. Dawn Smith also drove in a run in the fourth with a base hit.

Daniel allowed only one hit in four innings. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. Hayley Hanson pitched a scoreless fifth inning to close out the game.

Panthers open 2006 season with win
March 3, 2006

MARION, Ala.- LaGrange College opened its 2006 season with a 5-2 win over Judson College at Tutwiler Field.

Senior Stephanie Bassett and freshman Amanda Jones led the way for the Panthers. Bassett hit her first career home run and made a nice defensive play. Jones led the Panthers' 10-hit attack with three hits, including a double.

The Panthers used three pitchers in the game. Megan Henry started and threw three scoreless innings to pick up the win. Amanda Daniel allowed a run in two innings of work. Hayley Hanson finished the game, allowing an unearned run in two innings and picking up a save.

The Panthers benefitted from two Eagle errors in the first inning to go up 1-0. Kellee Scandrett reached on the first error with one out. She moved over to third on a ground out and a stolen base. Adrianne Brown reached on the second error, allowing Scandrett to score.

The Panthers used a pair of defensive plays to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. In the second, catcher Mary Carden tagged out Amber George in a rundown on a botched bunt attempt. Bassett threw out Shamillia Allison trying to score from second on a two-out base hit to end the third inning.

The Panthers picked up another unearned run in the fourth to go up 2-0. Meagen Spratling reached on a one-out error. After moving up on a passed ball, Spratling scored on Kim Woodard's two-out double.

Judson cut the Panthers' lead to 2-1 in the fourth. Bassett got the run back for the Panthers in the top of the fifth. She led off the inning with a home run to left off starter and loser Stephanie McGlinchey to make it 3-1.

The Panthers led 3-2 going into the final inning. They picked up a pair of insurance runs for the 5-2 final score. Brown, Jones and Kim Underwood started the inning with base hits. Brown scored on Underwood's hit to make it 4-2. Jones scored on Jessica DeMooney's sacrifice fly for the Panthers' final run.

The Panthers host the University of the South on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
