Spelman overcomes Panthers' early lead for 6-2 win

DECATUR, Ga. – Spelman College overcame an early LaGrange College lead and went on to a 6-2 GSAC win Tuesday at Agnes Scott College. The win tied the Jaguars (8-6-1, 7-3-1 GSAC) with Agnes Scott for second in the GSAC standings. The Panthers fell to 4-9-1 overall and 3-7-1 in conference play.

LaGrange struck for two goals in less than five minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Stephanie McRae opened the scoring with her team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 13-minute mark of the first half. Julie Smith got the assist on the McRae's goal. Jenna Lanza followed with her second goal of the season off an assist from Akina Omae.

The Panthers held on to the lead until the final five minutes of the half. Spelman scored three goals in the span to take the lead at halftime. Sharitta Carter and Danielle Stallings scored for the Jaguars to tie the game at 2-2. Olivia Stinson scored in the final seconds of the half to put the Jaguars ahead to stay, 3-2.

Spelman added three more goals in the second half to pull away. Nailah Young had two of the goals of the half. In between Young's scores, Stallings scored her second goal of the game.

LaGrange goalkeeper Jennifer Eby had 15 saves in the game. Spelman outshot the Panthers 33-13 in the game. Amanda Tyler had nine saves for the Jaguars.

The Panthers close out the regular season at home against Wesleyan on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
